PETER OLIN

October 18, 1945 - May 13, 2024

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Peter Olin, age 78, on the evening of May 13, 2024, at the Simkin Centre in Winnipeg. Dad leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Roslind, his sons and daughter-in-laws, Gerald (Kerri) and Elliot (Ally), his grandchildren, Ashton, Ava, and Moshe, and his many nieces and nephews.

Dad was born in 1945 and was predeceased by his parents and three siblings. The youngest child of Max and Evelyn, dad loved his siblings, Jack, Coreen, and Janet. Dad was born and raised in the north end of Winnipeg. He graduated from St. John's High School. Dad would later work for several decades at Knit Rite Mills and Rice Sportswear. Despite health issues throughout his life, including diabetes since his teenage years, dad never missed a day of work. His work ethic was exemplary.

Dad loved his family and took tremendous pride in everyone's accomplishments. He dedicated his life to ensuring his sons attended private schools and attended university. This was very important to him.

Dad loved our family dogs; their last, Cookie was his special buddy. Dad also loved collecting silver coins, passing the football in the yard, dance aerobics classes, swimming, going to the Wellness Institute for exercise with our mom, watching Jets and Bombers games, watching Young and the Restless, Bloomberg News Network, CTV National News Network, coffee and lots of it, Pepsi Zero and a good fried chicken dinner or Big Mac. Dad's passion was cars. He knew everything about the newest vehicle models, and which one was best rated. If you wanted to buy a car, you needed to talk to dad first.

Dad and mom spent all of their time together. They were together for almost 60 years. Inseparable until just recently when dad moved into Simkin Centre.

Anyone that met our father would be attracted to his outgoing energy and warmth. This was most evident in the final 4.5 months of his life. Although he terribly missed my mother when he moved into Simkin Centre, dad forged new relationships at the Table of Four. David, George, and Allan became his table friends at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They would talk getting louder and louder, as they partook in discussions about the world including life at Simkin. Dad participated in exercise classes, played bingo, played trivia games, went to synagogue and concerts, baked banana bread, went for a bike ride as recent as last week, and loved strolling around Simkin in his wheelchair. Our dad also loved the staff and in particular, became very fond of nurse, Jane Jaculak, the Unit Coordinator on Weinberg 3. Dad lived a very active and full life at Simkin during his short time there and we are grateful for that.

Dad would want us to say a special thank you to Jane Jaculak; who dad truly enjoyed joking around with, he respected and appreciated her, Rabbi Matthew Leibl; who he enjoyed spending time with at Simkin, and Dr. Claudio Rigatto; dad's nephrologist. Dr. Rigatto was kind and compassionate and our dad and mom mentioned how wonderful a doctor he is. We are grateful for his many years of compassionate listening and wonderful advice.

Dad's funeral and internment was on May 15, 2024, at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery.

Our dad was a beautiful man and was loved by so many. We will all continue to live our lives in a way that honours his legacy. His memory will be a blessing to us all and will shine bright in our lives forever.

Boy do we miss you!! We love you dad!!

  • What a beautiful tribute to Your husband, father, father in-law and grandfather. He would have truly enjoyed reading what was written about him. I have known Peter most of my life. Growing up he he was a close friend to my brother and hangout at our house almost daily. I have never known him to be anything but kind and always a jokester. The day that he was the happiest was the say he was introduced to your mom and life would never be the same after that. I was honoured to be a bridesmaid at their wedding. Safe travel Peter your work here is done. - Posted by: Roslyn Saurette (cousin) on: May 25, 2024
