SHIRLEY JOYCE SPRINGER
Peacefully on May 19, 2024, Shirley Joyce Springer, aged 72 years of Ashern, MB, passed away at Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern, MB, with her family at her side.
She was born at the hospital in Eriksdale, MB on April 29, 1952, the eldest child of Art and Alma (nee Bittner) Springer. Growing up on the family farm, she went to school first at Carn Ridge School and later Moosehorn Collegiate. After graduation she lived in several places including Winnipeg, Port Hardy and Ottawa before ending up back in the Interlake for good in the mid-1980s. She moved to Ashern in 1990 where she raised her son and worked many years at both the Ashern Dollar Store and Ashern Daycare before retiring in 2017. In her retirement she was able to spend her days enjoying her hobbies such as cooking, baking, talking to friends and family on the phone, and gardening, with her yard becoming more and more covered with a variety of beautiful plants as the years passed.
Mom faced a lot of challenges throughout her life. At the age of 23 she had a tumour removed from her spine and had to learn to walk again, she endured a stabbing in 1998, and had multiple battles with cancer in her later years just to name a few. However, through it all, she never lost her positive outlook on life and found a lot of comfort in her faith. She carried on living her life right until the very end.
She is survived by her son Joel (Kyra); brothers, Alan (Darlene), Don (Cheryl) and Wayne; nieces and nephews, Julie, Alan, Charis, Dale and Devin and their respective families; uncles and aunts, Art and Marj Bittner, Elsa Springer, Karen Springer, and Herb and Marilyn Springer and numerous other family, friends and neighbours. She was predeceased by her mom Alma in 1994 and dad Art in 2005, along with numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and other family.
Mom also left behind a few words of her own before her passing. “To anyone who has contributed to my life’s journey, thank you and God bless.” And a wish for each of us to take the time to “plant a tree for the dwindling songbirds, a flower for the struggling butterflies and hardworking bees, to take time to admire the clouds, and to laugh.”
In accordance with her wishes no funeral will be held. A private family interment at Hope Cemetery will take place later this summer.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in her memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc., 1160 - 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, Living Independence for Elders, Box 684, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0, Good Hope Cemetery c/o Colin Brown, Box 8, Moosehorn, MB R0C 2E0, or any charity of your choice.
