DOREEN PEARL GRIEVE

June 15, 1939 - May 27, 2024

Doreen Pearl Grieve passed away peacefully at Virden Health Centre, Monday, May 27, 2024 at the age of 84.

She was predeceased by her parents, Stanley and Beatrice Hudson; her brother, Raymond and sister, Dorothy.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 31 years, Alex; sons, Daniel (Donna), Darcy (Patti) and Morris (Leanne); grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler, Brielle, Amanda and their spouses, as well as Matthew and Preston and four great-grandchildren.

Doreen was born in the Killarney Nursing Home on June 15, 1939 and attended rural schools in that area including Ninga.

Following her marriage, she farmed in the Carroll area with her husband raising her three sons there. She faithfully transported her three boys to all the sporting events they participated in. She drove a feeder school bus to Carrol. She worked in Souris, Nesbitt and Brandon prior to moving to Virden.

As a long- time member of the Canadian Foresters she was a member of a rink that won the Ladies Canadian Forester Championship in Chilliwack, BC in 1968.

On September 26, 1992 she married Alex and moved to help him farm west of Virden. She especially enjoyed running their air conditioned IHC 1440 combine. While still farming they moved into Virden in the fall of 2003. They enjoyed 20 plus years as seasonal campers at Aspen Grove Campground.

Doreen was a great cook. She got much enjoyment spending time with her grandchildren and their children. She enjoyed many kinds of needle work including cross stitch and needlepoint and in later years sewing square dance clothes and many, many quilts. All of her family was given a quilt made especially for them.

She was always active in the community. She was a member of The Elkhorn Agricultural Society and helped write their history book for their hundredth anniversary. She served for six years on Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame Board.

She was a member of Virden and District Health Auxiliary, The Village Choir and a founding member of the Crazy Stitchers Quilting Club. She served on the Donors Choice Board and delivered Meals on Wheels. She also helped Alex write a history book celebrating Virden Lions 50 years as a club.

For recreation they camped in the summer and danced in the winter with Virden Cromer Clippers, Oak Lake Toe Tappers, Extenders and Satellite Squares square dance clubs as well as a round dance club and Moosomin Social Pattern Dance Club.

Dancing took them from Halifax in the east (3500 dancers) to Osoyoos in the west, Whitecourt to the north, to the Las Vegas Polkafest (twice) and Mesa in the south and many places in between.

They enjoyed many nights dancing with the friendly people in Eastern Saskatchewan. They took many bus trips with The Fugitives dance band and Country Blend concert band. A highlight of their travels was a three week trip to New Zealand in 2008. Finally long-time ill health took its toll.

A funeral service was held at Carscadden Funeral Chapel, Virden, Manitoba Saturday, June 1, 2024 with Tanis Podobni as Celebrant.

She was carried to her final resting place in Virden Cemetery by her grandsons Ryan, Tyler, Matthew Groves and grandsons-in-law, Billy Desmarais and Tyler Farrell and great-nephew Rhett Grieve.

Her family would like to thank all the health care professionals in the Virden, Brandon and St. Boniface Hospitals for the kind way they took care of her during her lengthy illness.
