It is with great sadness and sorrow we announce the passing of George Murray Matheson, on Friday, June 7, 2024 in Drayton Valley at the age of 81 years. "Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow."
George's memory will forever be cherished by his daughter, Margo (Corey); step-daughters, Wendy, Susan (Robert), and Robin; grandchildren, Gabrielle, Hannah, Nathan, Andrew, Camron, Corey, Caden, Randy, and Alexander; siblings, Jack, and Allan (Valerie); nieces and nephews, Melanie, Murray (Nicole) their daughter Olivia, Carla (Clint) their children Caden and Callum.
George was predeceased by is first wife, Barbara; his second wife, Norma; sister-in-law Del; nephew, John; and parents, Murray and Beatrice.
George enjoyed the outdoors especially if it included fishing, hunting birds, and big game hunting. George was an avid golfer. George had a very creative and artistic side, he was an artist on many different mediums, like leather and canvas; he also carved out loons, and fish.
George was a man who taught his family and others to weigh decisions carefully, considering the good and bad, the pros and cons. He emphasized not rushing to a decision and being honest in everyday life. He deeply loved his daughter Margo, and loved being a grandpa.
When he wasn't outdoors or creating art, he was a teacher, an English teacher. He wanted to instill in students the love of poetry and Shakespeare, he encouraged students to explore their inner poet to see the world in words that blended together to create a poem. He had a way of making Shakespeare come alive and relevant to young minds. George made a significant impact on the lives of many students he taught, leaving a lasting mark. "O Captain my Captain, you will be missed."
A Celebration of Life for George will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ayotte and Dr. Botes, Drayton Valley Hospital nurses and staff. To the homecare team and the palliative care nurses, Erica and Gail for helping Margo to keep her dad home for as long as they could.
In lieu of flowers a memorial donation can be made in George's name to Ducks Unlimited.
