VICTOR A. CHAPUT

1939 - 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Chaput on June 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 85 years.

Victor is survived by his loving wife Helen of 60 years, sons Thomas (Nadia) and Daniel (Lisa) and his beloved granddaughters Tamara and Oksana; brother Paul (Mimi) Chaput, in-laws Micheline Chaput, Paul Marcoux, Armand (Anita) Vallée, and Sophie Moskalyk; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by his son John Paul; parents Georges and Amélie Chaput; sisters Marie Chaput, Hélène Vallée, Patricia Marcoux, brother Jean Chaput; parents in-law Paul and Mary Moskalyk and brother-in-law Jerry Moskalyk.

Growing up in Saint-Boniface, Victor made many lifelong friendships including Paul Boulanger, Gilles Marius, and Aime Boily. Even though he had already met his future wife, Helen, independent and strong-minded, Victor left home to pursue both hockey and his university studies at Bemidji State, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Returning home, Victor and Helen were married and began their life together. Victor furthered his studies and completed a Bachelor of Education and his Pre-Masters work at the University of Manitoba.

Victor’s passion and love for education was very evident in his roles as teacher at Beliveau Junior High and Windsor Park Collegiate, as school administrator at Pierre Radisson Collegiate, Tuxedo Park School, Laidlaw School, Royal Elementary School, and finally as Director of French Immersion Programming in the Assiniboine South School Division. In retirement, he enjoyed mentoring new teachers as a practicum advisor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba.

Victor had a huge heart. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a very doting grandfather. The family will forever cherish many happy memories of childhood road trips, winter vacations down south and of course all the summers spent at the cottage which he built on lake Winnipeg.

As a lover of the outdoors and athletics, he played hockey, cycled, walked his dogs and enjoyed his many canoe trips with close friend Howard Holtman through Woodlands Caribou Park, the Yukon River and a special trip through the Queen Charlotte Islands, joined by his sons.

Victor had a smile and a story for anyone who would listen. He was a handyman, and counsellor always ready to help, fix anything, and give much needed advice to his family, especially his granddaughters, whom he adored.

The Chaput family expresses their heartfelt thanks to Rev. Fr. Micheal Winn, and all family and friends, as well as the neighbours on West Springs Cove, who kept Victor in their prayers during this difficult period.

They also convey their deep gratitude to Dr. John Mayba for his years of care and support; to Dr. Andrew Maksymiuk, the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, and finally to the St. Boniface Palliative Care unit, for their advice, care and compassion.

In accordance with Victor’s wishes, his life will be celebrated privately with family and friends in August.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to CancerCare Manitoba.

  • We were very saddened to hear about Mr. Chaput’s passing. Our sincere condolences to Helen & the family. We have lived on West Springs Cove for 19 years and seeing Mr. Chaput riding his bike, working on his yard or enjoying his day sitting in his garage will truly be missed. His wonderful stories he would share, slowing down in his car just so say hi and make small talk as he drove off or just hearing his words of wisdom were certainly a delight. Truly an intelligent and wonderful man. Rest in peace Mr. Chaput. - Posted by: Sandy & Amerjit Dhillon (Neighbours ) on: Jul 16, 2024

  • My deepest sympathies to Helen and family. No matter the occasion, whenever I met Vic, our conversations were always animated and he always took the time to inquire about me and my family. May you rest in peace Vic. Your zest for life will be fondly remembered. - Posted by: Janine Labelle (Cousin) on: Jul 06, 2024

  • I’m sorry to hear of passing of Mr. Chaput. My condolences to the family. He was so well liked at PRC and he was such a friendly/caring man. He made sure to really listen to you whenever you had a concern or just wanted to chat as he walked the halls. I remember sitting at the tables outside of Woodshop, when he approached our group, he never showed any anger or even disappointment that we were in class, but spoke to us like he was one of us. Mr. Chaput you will be missed in this world, as we need more people like you. Rest In Peace - Posted by: Cheryl Enquist (Former student at PRC) on: Jul 05, 2024

  • After 20 years being neighbours, I still cannot process not seeing him in his chair in the garage, talking about life - family, politics, education, books, adventure, etc. He was SO proud of his family - especially his granddaughters. He was such a fit, hard working, caring friend. Despite years of enduring throngs of teenagers on our street (and all that comes with it), he remained protective, patient & good humoured. I will deeply miss our chats, his advice & giving him crap for being up on a ladder. But his love & his words will remain forever woven throughout the fabric of our family! ❤️ RIP Vic. And F! cancer!! - Posted by: Maura Champagne (Friend/Neighbor) on: Jul 04, 2024

  • An amazing teacher/vice principal. He accompanied a school trip from Pierre Radisson Collegiate to Europe in the mid-seventies. I was one of the younger students and was very sick on the boat. I felt so comforted and nurtured by Mr. Chaput, he always looked out for me and my well-being. He brought such a high energy on this trip and throughout the halls of the school. He had an incredibly positive impact on me. My sincere condolences with the families’ loss. - Posted by: Colleen Campbell Mountjoy (Past Student) on: Jul 04, 2024

  • With my parents, we moved in next door to Vic and Helen 20 years ago. Although I have long since moved out, Vic would always stop for a chat with me and my partner, and then with our kids whenever we came to visit family. He made everyone feel important; even remembering activities of interest as the kids grew. He listened like he truly cared about what you said, and he provided advice gently but with the weight of knowledge. He was such a kind man and we are so happy to have known him and had him in our lives all these years. - Posted by: Lauren Manuel (Neighbour ) on: Jul 02, 2024

  • Vic truly was one of the greatest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, he always wanted to know what I was up to and was always there to offer me advice when I wasn’t sure about where to go in life. I can’t count the amount of times he has helped me when I was struggling with a problem I had. He always let me ramble on about whatever new thing I was interested and always made my feelings feel validated. Anyone who has had the pleasure Of meeting him will say the same thing, that he is truly such a wonderful man and he will be missed so so much. Even when saying my goodbyes to him he just kept asking about me, making sure I had a plan and I would be taken care of. I will miss him so so much, but I am so unbelievably grateful that I had him in my life. Rest in peace Vic. - Posted by: Owen Champagne (Friend/Neighbour ) on: Jul 02, 2024

  • I was very sad to hear of Vic’s passing. He had offered me good advice when I was telling him my young kids didn’t want to play sports. They were still very young. He told me to let them play. Just let them play. So I did. I never doubted his words. I always remember them, and was thankful for them. You are all in my prayers. - Posted by: Linds Decloux (Cousin) on: Jul 01, 2024

  • We would like to extend our sympathy to Helen and family. We have been West Springs Cove neighbours of the Chaputs for 35 years. Vic was a friendly man who loved to discuss current events and always greeted people with a smile and a wave. He was always genuinely interested in what was happening with the neighbourhood kids as they grew up. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Debbie and Don Rogalsky (Neighbours) on: Jun 30, 2024

  • Mr. Chaput was my principal at Laidlaw School for grades 7 & 8. He always made me feel welcome and seen. He would become a mentor to me as I went into education and became a teacher. It was an honour for me to be on his staff as a student teacher and for a short time as a regular staff member. I moved to Ontario 35 years ago but never forgot the ones who helped me along the way. He always spoke lovingly of his family. I know that he will be missed but also well remembered. - Posted by: Joanne Roddy (Former student. ) on: Jun 30, 2024

  • Heartfelt condolences to the Chaput family on Vic’s passing. I grew up on West Springs Cove and had the pleasure of getting to visit with Vic whenever he was out doing yard work or sitting on his folding chair in the garage, enjoying the nice weather and keeping an eye on the neighbourhood happenings. He was a kind and thoughtful man who went out of his way to do good for others. Even as he was going through cancer treatment, he maintained a positive and hopeful attitude. He was also a support to my sister when a close relative was diagnosed with cancer, and I so appreciate that he took the time to talk with and listen to her concerns and fears. Vic’s presence on West Springs Cove will be dearly missed. May his memory be a blessing. - Posted by: Chloe Alby-Koop (Former neighbour) on: Jun 29, 2024

  • Mr. Chaput was our vice Principal at Pierre Radisson Collegiate. He was someone you never forgot. He was highly respected and like by all. He had a way with students. You couldn't help but like him and the way he handled everything. He had a sense of humor and was a caring and honorable man. My condolences to his family as I know it must be a great loss. - Posted by: Debbie Kolaski (Hurdle) (Past student) on: Jun 29, 2024
