JOANN KAKOSKE

April 5, 1949 – June 14, 2024

Surrounded by the love of her family, JoAnn passed away on June 14, at Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

JoAnn was the only child of the late Ernest and Adeline Elvin. She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 55 years, Garry Kakoske, daughters - Tracey Moore (Calvin), Trina Smith (Michelle) and Melanie Backstrom (Jerad) as well as grandchildren - Triss and Evan, Nate and Sam, Rhys, Grace and Hunter.

JoAnn grew up in St. Vital and prior to the arrival of children, she worked for the Metropolitan Corporation of Winnipeg. Once her youngest was off to school, she was employed at Arc Industries for 16 years where she forged many lasting friendships with both colleagues and clients. She retired in April of 2012 to spend more time with her grandchildren.

As a mother and grandmother, she spent many years nurturing the growing family, but found time to continue to have a well-rounded life. The family will always have wonderful memories of camping and renting various cabins, until they purchased their own on the Lee River in 1992. She loved travelling often with Garry and the girls, or lifelong friend Sharon, to destinations including Disney World, Jamaica, Hawaii and Europe. She and Garry enjoyed many holidays in their senior years at their favourite resort in Guayabitos, Mexico.

For decades she hosted dinners, showers, and parties for the extended family and friends and enjoyed many afternoons socializing with her gal pals. JoAnn was blessed with many talents including a beautiful singing voice and for over 16 years, was a valued member of the Sisters of the Holy Rock, raising over a million dollars for charity. JoAnn and Garry also spent summers running My Berry Happy Place raspberry farm for charity fundraising and making raspberry freezer jam.

JoAnn had an infectious smile, a generous heart and spent her entire life putting others first.

In accordance with JoAnn’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends may honour her memory by donating to a charity of their choice.

JoAnn was loved and will be missed every day. As she would say, “We’ll see you when we see you.”

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I was so sorry to hear Joann had passed away. Noel and I, Jo and Garry shared many dinners together at their place and ours. Joann not only had a lovely tenor voice, she was also a very good cook. She was very proud of her daughters, who meant the world to her. I am not sure how it really works but I hope she meets Noel, up there in heaven and they can talk about all the laughs we shared together.
