WHOSE GENEROSITY, HER MEMORIAL AND WHOSE LOVE, HER FAMILY
Has passed on peacefully at Holy Family Home in Winnipeg at the age of 88.
Evelyn was born on October 16, 1935, in Seech, Manitoba to Wasyl and Annie Matiowsky and grew up on a farm in the district known as the Parkland Region of western Manitoba. She was predeceased by: her father (1977) and mother (1995), husband Ted (1995); and five siblings - Olga (1999), Alex (2013), Matt (2007), Zane (2009) and Paul (2011).
Evelyn is survived by her sons, Ben (Evelyn) and David (Deanne) with two grandchildren, Kaira (Myles), Derek (Jayde) and one very special great-granddaughter Margot.
She is also survived by her brother Mervin (Ann) and a great many godchildren, nieces and nephews, dear friends, who all were cared for and given much support and attention over the years.
Evelyn was a kind, warm, talented, and generous lady whose life was marked by dedication to family, friends, and community. She was also highly respected and appreciated by her co-workers and friends in giving over six decades of volunteer service to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, Seven Oaks Hospital and Oseredok of Winnipeg.
With many goals, Evelyn worked diligently to preserve, develop, and nurture Ukrainian cultural heritage and traditions as contributions to Canadian culture. Along with her husband, they achieved international recognition in presenting and creating a collection of “Pysanky” (Ukrainian Easter Eggs) that spanned 60 years.
Mom was a visual artist and soprano vocalist and gave the gift of her song to the Metropolitan Cathedral Choir for over 30 years.
We express our profound gratitude for being the mother and grandmother we all loved and respected. She always carried the titles of wife, Mom, Baba, sister, godmother, “Kooma”, aunt and friend with an immense sense of pride and dignity.
Evelyn’s love for art, music, flowers, and all that is good, has left an indelible mark on all who have met her. She will remain in our hearts forever.
As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral - Restoration Fund - 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB R2W 3S4 or The Shevchenko Foundation for the Arts - 260 St. Mary Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0M6.
