In the morning of Friday, June 28, 2024, Nina Luhowy passed away peacefully at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. She was 97 years old.
Nina was born on April 9, 1927, in the town of Matiyiv, Volyn Region, Ukraine. She was the daughter of Arsenij and Iryna Kozachuk and had two sisters, Zoya and Raya.
In 1948, Nina immigrated to Canada and came to Winnipeg. She met Stefan Luhowy and they married on November 25, 1950. They had three children, Alex, George, and Irene and lived very happily together until Stefan’s passing in 2013.
Nina was an avid homemaker and a member of several organizations, including the Volyn Society and the Ukrainian Catholic Woman’s League. She was a loyal parishioner of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Nina was a devoted wife. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother and to the end, she extolled the virtue of a close-knit family. She could be relied upon to remember and honour important family events.
Nina was predeceased by her husband, Stefan, as well as her parents and two sisters.
Left to cherish her memory are: her son, Alex (Sylvia), her son, George, her daughter, Irene (Dan), her nephews and nieces and dear friends.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday, July 5 at 10.00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 390 Marion St., Winnipeg, followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation for humanitarian aid for Ukraine would be appreciated.
