It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandad, uncle, brother and brother-in-law on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, Curtis and Helen Gilbert. He is survived by his daughter Stacey, son-in-law Jamie and granddaughter Ayla, sisters, Maureen and Kelly (Greg), brothers, Patrick and Robert (Andrea), nephew Luke and niece Kathleen.
Dad was a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry) and had just retired from a 46-year teaching career. He will be missed by his many teaching colleagues and former students, most recently at Yellowquill University College.
Dad loved learning, film, music and creative writing in his spare time. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
In keeping with Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place and will be followed by a private family service at a later date.

I was shocked and Saddened, When I got that phone call from one of the teachers at YQUC, Mr. David Gilbert was a great teacher, very funny and he also made learning fun, I will always remember him. Mr. Gilbert put humor and laughter into his teachings, He also wanted his students to achieve their goals. I am happy I got to be one of his students. I am sorry for your loss Family of Mr. David Gilbert. - Posted by: Rachel Crow (Former Student at YellowQuill University College) on: Sep 09, 2024

I am so saddened to hear of Mr. Gilbert’s death. I was a student of his at REC in 1981/82. I was in his home room, as well as English and Law classes. The creative writing assignments were so cutting edge and designed to make you be as creative as possible. I agree with others that he had such a wicked sense of humour. Never a dull moment in his classes. He always encouraged me to go as far as my aspirations would take me and I’m so grateful for that. My condolences to his family. He was an outstanding teacher. Dave Gilbert’s passing came as a shock. On staff at River East Collegiate Dave seemed to be a larger than life character. He kept everyone amused with unusual antics during staff meetings providing comic relief. He once scaled the wall of the library at the beginning of a staff meeting. Students loved his classes. It didn’t matter if the class was Law, English or Creative Writing — they just knew they were lucky to be in Mr. Gilbert’s class. In more recent years Dave called me up and treated me to breakfast a few times in the summer and I appreciated the chance to catch up with him and he would ask me what I knew about former colleagues at River East Collegiate. Now I will miss those times, too. Farewell, Dave. - Posted by: Ken Clark (Former colleague at River East Collegiate and friend) on: Jul 12, 2024

Dave Gilbert was my high school English teacher years ago at River East Collegiate. He was a great teacher and, more importantly, a supportive and encouraging person. I’m truly saddened at the news of his passing. - Posted by: Paul Bauer (Former Student) on: Jul 06, 2024

Mr Gilbert was one of my favourite teachers at River East mostly because English was my favourite class but also because he was a pretty fun and understanding person. I wrote an essay on Hamlet and on the title page that I made a hand drawing of Hamlet holding Horacio’s skull Mr Gilbert drew a little wind up key on his skull. And on part of the essay he wrote “good writing - I think you’re ready for the big time!” I still have that essay and every-time I look back at it it makes me laugh. I never made the big time as a writer but even after all these years I still remember my teacher. That’s a pretty big deal. He did good. I am sorry for everyone’s loss. - Posted by: Alix McLachlan (Former student at River East Collegiate) on: Jul 06, 2024

Mr. Gilbert was my law teacher in REC in the early 80’s. He taught lecture style and while I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up for the class, after a few weeks, I was sure glad I did. Mr. Gilbert was a great teacher. Teaching lecture style made law interesting and, I think, easier to learn. I’m sorry to have read of his passing. My condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Kevin ((former student from REC in the early 80's - I can't recall the exact year I took law)) on: Jul 06, 2024
