Metta Gudrun (Thorkelson) Johnson died peacefully at Betel Personal Care Home, Friday, June 14, 2024, aged 101. She was born in Arnes, MB, March 22, 1923.
She leaves to mourn her children, Brenda (Richard), Wendy, Conrad (Lauretta), Curtis (Gail-Ann), and Brent (Marlene), grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her brother Harold Thorkelson, nephew Phillip (Rosemary) Thorkelson, sisters-in-law Audrey (Earl) Clayton, Kathy Johnson as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph and son Christopher; parents Johanna and Sigridur Thorkelson and aunt Gunna; Sisters, Freda, Goody, Jona, Emily and brother, Sam.
She became a permit teacher in 1943 at a one-room school in Larkspur, MB, where she billeted with Steini and Margaret Johnson. There she met Joseph and was later married at the Arnes Lutheran Church September 4, 1948.
Metta and Joseph worked together to help build a thriving community in Eddystone. While raising their family they ran a General Store, fish shed and switchboard, and were very involved in community activities. Despite the hectic pace, their home was warm and welcoming, accompanied with coffee, aroma of fresh baked Icelandic bread.
Education was important to Mom which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. She also believed in giving them "roots to grow and wings to fly". Mom was a 4H leader, Ladies Auxiliary and United Church member and was editor of the local history book, "Patience, Pride and Progress". Mom helped make what seemed an ordinary community an extraordinary place to live.
Joseph and Metta moved to Gimli Waterfront Center where they were closer to their family, which they cherished. Her last years were spent at Betel Care Home and we wish to thank the Betel staff for their care and generous support. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the New Iceland Heritage Museum, Gimli. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Arnes Community Hall on Saturday, July 20 at 2:00 p.m.

I’m sorry to hear about Metta’s passing. I will always cherish my memories of visiting Joseph & Metta. Helping Joseph with his antique vehicle collection working at getting as many vehicles running as we could possibly get and at noon Metta would come get me cause it was time for lunch! After my soup & sandwich with coffee was done I could go back to working on Model T’s & Model A’s! I enjoyed talking to both of them, grateful for their part in writing the history book of the area and the people who settled there, built a homestead and raised families which were always important to Joseph & Metta as well as everyone else who either lived there or had relatives who grew up in the area. Metta (as well as other relatives) never knew the fascination Joseph & I shared in antiques but she must have witnessed our joy when we would talk about an old car, gun, telephone or farm implement. Those days are all gone now but the memories I have of them will always be with me! Thank you for your warm welcomes during my many visits. I had the opportunity to visit Metta in February and it still amazed me the memory she had. She remembered me, my sisters, mom & dad, my Grandma Gertie Moore and most amazing my Grandpa Henry Moore who passed away in 1947. My sympathies go out to Metta’s family on the loss of a great woman.
