RUDOLF REGINALD (REG) OMICHINSKI

September 23, 1931 - May 13, 2024

Rudolf Reginald Omichinski of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2024, at the age of 92 years.

Reg was born on September 23, 1931, near Oakville, Manitoba, to Joseph and Catherine Omichinski. Born the last child of 13, Reg spent his early life on the family farm surrounded by his seven brothers and five sisters.

Reg left the farm to pursue a career with Imperial Oil and worked in operations at the Winnipeg Refinery. Upon news that the refinery was going to close, “Mother Esso” offered Reg the opportunity to move to Alberta to start up the Esso Chemical Fertilizer Plant near Redwater. Reg took this opportunity and moved his family to Fort Saskatchewan. Reg, a natural leader, held many roles at the facility working his way into management. Reg was also a leader in the community, and served as Chairman of the Fort Saskatchewan Catholic School Board and two new schools were built on his watch. Always a Knight’s of Columbus member, Reg relished every opportunity to get involved with the community and his church, which included singing in the choir.

Reg took an early retirement package from Esso in his mid-50s but remained extremely active. Using his deep knowledge and experience in the fertilizer business, he consulted on the start-up of a fertilizer facility in the Philippines. He also sold real estate for five years and served one term as a Fort Saskatchewan City Councilor. Always giving back, Reg founded the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank, and led an army of volunteers for the annual Christmas Hamper Campaign.

Reg was married to his loving wife Ivy (Harbour) for 62 years, Ivy passed away in 2017.

Reg is survived by his two children, Douglas (Debbie) and Grant (Norma); his grandchildren, Lindseigh, Angela, and Tomas; and his great-grandchildren, Christopher, Clover, and Nadia.
