GAIL HITESMAN

February 28, 1934 - July 4, 2024

Gail Hitesman (nee Chadwick) passed away peacefully at home at the age of 90. Gail was a gentle soul, full of love and kindness. She will be dearly missed. Born in Saskatchewan but moved to Winnipeg where in high school she met the love of her life Robert (Bob) Hitesman (d.2010). Gail is survived by children Ann (Brian), Robert (Therese), and Jill (Randy); grandchildren Ryan (Lyndsey), Chris, and Jennifer; step grandchildren, Quentin, David (Janelle), and Rhys (Emily); and 5 great-grandchildren and 4 step great-grandchildren.

Gail was a wonderful human, friend, daughter, wife, mother, and a devoted grandmother to her “doobies”. Being able to see and touch her great grandbabies brought her such joy in the last years of her life. Gail was a lover of the arts, food, and drink whose inquisitive mind never stood still. She loved to cook, sing musicals, and support the visual and musical arts.

Gail was the heart of the business she and Bob owned until their retirement. Reading, gardening, dancing, and movies were just some of the many hobbies and interests that Gail and Bob enjoyed together for over 50 years. Her favorite memories were from the family cottage at Arnes, their legendary parties at home in Winnipeg, visits with her sister’s family the Jeffersons, lunches with her ladies and playing with grandchildren. She loved life and knew how to have fun! She despised cruelty and boredom, always had a kind or stoic word, and was devoted to caring for others. Nothing brought Gail more joy than feeding people and animals. Gail would joke that she came from a long line of “force feeders”, offering items until one was found that could not be resisted. So dear friends still with us, please raise a glass or eat a cookie and think of her one-of-a-kind smiles.

The details of a Celebration of Life will be provided at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that people donate to Winnipeg’s Agape Table or a charity that feeds your community.

The family would like to thank the WHRA Palliative and Home Care Coordinators, Nurses, Home Care Angels and Nurse Heather, whose kindness and care were astounding, as well as Dr. Alvin Schroeder and Dr. Alan Poon for her ongoing medical care.

  • We really miss Gail, our neighbour of over 30 years. She took such enjoyment of the simple things in her life. Watching the many animals in her yard, her garden, and sports on tv, and her family. She was so cheerful and content even though I’m sure she was often so physically uncomfortable. Taught us to stop and just enjoy all the life has to offer. Glad she passed on her own terms in her home. She will be missed. We think of her every time the deer pass our yard on their way to rest in her yard. Our condolences to her family - Posted by: Deb and George (Neighbour) on: Jul 14, 2024

  • Gail was an amazing lady whose smile and positive outlook brightened the day of everyone she met. I was fortunate to have been in her life for the last 3 1/2 years, we started out as caregiver/client but quickly became great friends and it was an honour to care for her until the end. I will miss her. My thoughts are with her family at this difficult time. She was greatly loved. - Posted by: Heather (Friend/caregiver ) on: Jul 14, 2024
