Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLOIS CATHERINE SCOTT
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Lois Catherine Scott on June 25, 2024, at the age of 95. Predeceased by her sister Janet Evelyn Redgwell (née Scott), she is survived by her nieces Catherine Redgwell (and Steve Weatherill) and Elaine Redgwell (and Peter Sandberg), and by her grandniece Chelsea Sandberg.
A native of Winnipeg, Lois attended Queenston, Robert H. Smith and Kelvin High Schools. This was followed by Normal School, then the University of Manitoba where she obtained first her B.A. and then a B.Ed, followed ten years later by the completion of an M.Ed. She enjoyed teaching, reminiscing at her Normal School reunion in 2001 that ‘I spent most of the years up to 1985 (when I retired) doing some form of teaching – and loved it all’. In the early years of her teaching career, she combined this educational drive with a thirst for travel, teaching in Northern Manitoba (the Pas) and Northern British Columbia (Prince George) as well as spending two years as a supply (substitute) teacher in London, England. Her time in the UK provided a base for travel on the continent, particularly to the sunnier climate of Spain. Returning to Winnipeg, she completed her further education and, following teaching at River East and in Winnipeg School Division No. 1, became a reading clinician at the Child Guidance Clinic working for the next twenty or so years in St Vital and Winnipeg 1.
Upon her retirement in 1985, in addition to the delights of Hawaiian vacations in the depths of Winnipeg winters, she was to return to the UK many times, to renew acquaintance with the cultural delights of London, the scenery of Scotland, and the robust cups of ‘builders’ tea’ first encountered in London’s East End in the late 1950s. She remained close to family and friends in Winnipeg, residing in her later years at the Parkway, Brightwater and the Portsmouth retirement homes. Her final years at the Portsmouth were very happy ones, owing in no small measure to the wonderful caring staff there, the enjoyment of friends both new and old, and the proximity of her sister at nearby Tuxedo Village.
It is Lois’s express wish that no formal funeral service takes place, with private interment of her ashes at Elmwood Cemetery in the family plot.

I met Lois at U of M summer school many years ago. We reconnected after I married and lived in an apartment on Grant Ave to become neighbors. Later we both moved to south Winnipeg, we lived in Ft Richmond and she lived in an apartment near our place. It was always a pleasure to visit with Lois, always a smile on her face. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Hilda Muir (friend) on: Jul 20, 2024
