ALOJIZIJA (LOUISE) RAKAR

It is with great sadness and much love that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Alojizija ‘Louise’ Rakar on July 15, 2024, aged 94.

Louise was predeceased by her husband Karlo in 1993, and will be lovingly remembered by her son Martin Edward ‘Eddy’, wife Tracey (Matthew and Hannah); daughter Stephanie ‘Stivi’ and husband Ron; daughter Diane ‘Jana’, husband Marc (Olivia, Rayna, and Andreas); last surviving sibling Jozef and nephew Mark; brother-in-law Steve and wife Marica; nephew Dennis, wife Tammi (Emily and Alexander); nephew Brian; many relatives in Slovenija, Italy, England, and Argentina, and good friends and neighbours in Winnipeg.

Born in the small village of Breginj, Slovenija on June 16, 1930, to Jozef and Jozefa Mazora, Louise was the ninth of 11 children. She married Karlo in 1961 in their village, and shortly after made their home in Winnipeg where they became part of the Slovenijan Church and Community. Mom was a devout Catholic and two of her passions were singing and praying. She spent many years singing with the Slovenijan Church Choir. She had a beautiful soprano voice, and would lovingly sing the beautiful hymns and folk songs of Slovenija. She was also a wonderful baker, cook, seamstress and gardener. Often cooking and baking traditional Slovenijan goodies- potica, apple strudel, polenta, risotto, pasta and other delicious foods and sweets. She was often seen hemming and mending clothes of family and friends, knitting and crocheting, and walking her dogs around the neighbourhood. As new Canadians, there wasn’t a lot that we could afford, but mom would always make every day special with cooking great food, giving us lots of love and a warm hearted home.

She was also a loving grandmother who was so very proud of, devoted to, and loved her five grandchildren.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated August 1, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, 95 MacDonald Ave. with Rev. Diosdado P. Parrenas (Dado), Pastor officiating. Interment to follow at Green Acres Memorial Gardens.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Father Dado for visiting mom over the past few years; Dr. Maharaj, and the nurses and staff of St. Norbert Personal Care Home for their devoted care; and to dear friends and neighbours for your love and time spent with Louise.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Louise’s memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society or any local charity of your choice.

Pocivaj v Miru (Rest in Peace)

God made a wonderful mother,

A mother who never grows old;

He made her smile of the sunshine.

And He moulded her heart of pure gold.

In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,

In her cheeks fair roses you see;

God made a wonderful mother,

And He gave that dear mother to me.

  • I will always remember walking into the Rakar home at any time and there was always something cooking on the stove or being taken fresh out of the oven! Mrs. Rakar always greeted me with a smile and a quick chat before Diane and I flew off out the door somewhere! She really had a beautiful smile. She will be missed.
