MARGARET KNOWLES PLAXTON

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret "Margi/Muggs" who died, surrounded by family, on July 22, 2024.

Loving wife to Robert "Bob" for 43 years, predeceased. Devoted mother to Bruce (Cheryl), Jill (Vince) and Laura (Geoff). Cherished grandmother to Jordie, Avery, Sasha, Maddie, Izzy, and Ethan. Adored sister of David Knowles (Shirley predeceased). She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends. Her parents, The Honorable Stanley Knowles and Vida Knowles (nee Cruikshank) predeceased her.

Margi was born in Winnipeg on June 2, 1942, and was raised in the Wolseley and River Heights areas. Margi attended University of Manitoba and began her career as a teacher. In 1964 she married her soulmate Bob, and they had three children together. Once the children were born Margi decided to dedicate herself as a full-time mother. Margi was a wonderful mother who was always there for her children and family. She felt a great sense of pride in raising her kids and ensuring they always knew they were loved and supported. Margi had an unmatched sense of adventure and anyone that knew her would know she never turned down an opportunity for fun or adventure. Margi had a passion for life and loved people unconditionally and without reserve! She was great to talk to and could always be relied on to offer advice or a listening ear. She had many interests and hobbies. She loved nature, travel and photography! Margi travelled to numerous countries with Bob, friends and even solo at times. Her travels and adventures are too many to name - a few that come to mind are: at age 21 she hitchhiked across Europe with three girlfriends, in her 50s she lived in France for three months to study French, she travelled solo to BC to see Grizzly bears, at 74 she hiked the Camino trail in Spain, at age 79 she took a canoe trip in Algonquin park to see Moose in the wild, and travelled to Costa Rica with her niece at age 80. She was no stranger in meeting with the who’s who of the world! She met and dined with the late Queen Elizabeth and had the privilege of a visit with then Prince Charles (now King Charles), just to name a few of the dignitaries she’s met in her wonderful journey of life.

Margi had a strong spirit and great sense of independence. She learned to drive a boat at age 40 after Bob and her bought an island cottage at Lake of the Woods. She loved her time on Big Tree Island with Bob, the kids and many visitors. You cannot talk about Margi without mentioning her love of animals and wildlife. She had many beloved pets throughout her life, raised kittens, chickens and monarch butterflies. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Winnipeg Wildlife Foundation where she spent countless hours feeding baby birds and bunnies by eye droppers and releasing them back into the wild.

Margi lived in six different cities throughout her life: Winnipeg, Darien, Montreal, Keswick, Burlington and Oakville. She also spent cottage time at Sandy Hook as a kid, Victoria Beach as a young mother, and Lake of the Woods when the kids were a bit older. She enjoyed her condo in Punta Gorda, Florida as well.

Margi’s passion for photography mixed well with her love of travel. She took gorgeous photos of scenery and people and had a keen eye for capturing the perfect photo. Her photos were featured in two magazines.

Margi’s incredible spirit and love of life are reflected in her children and grandchildren who all carry on her sense of adventure and have found their passions in many different aspects of life. She is an inspiration and a treasured mother and grandmother.

Margi died the same way she lived, without fear, with great courage, and on her own terms. Margi choose to use MAiD after a terminal cancer diagnosis and a steep decline. It was a peaceful death filled with love and dignity. Her family surrounded her and sang her favourite songs, they decorated her room with flowers and rose petals, and with a crown of flowers upon her head she took her last breath and said goodbye to this beautiful world she so loved and the many people who so loved her. She will be sorely missed and always remembered.

Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home Burlington. As per Margie's request, please feel free to wear bright coloured clothing as she wanted to be celebrated.
