ELIZABETH MARY JOHNSON

It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth "Mary" Johnson on July 23, 2024 at the age of 92.

Born on January 16, 1932 in Winnipeg, Mary was raised by her loving parents Janet and David Carr along with sister Elsie and brother David.

As a lifelong resident of St. James Mary raised a family of four with her husband of nearly 40 years Al.

Mary was a very social person with a wide circle of friends. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, bowling, swimming and volunteered with the Woman's Auxiliary to the Navy League. Many leisurely summers were spent at the family cottage in Gimli.

Later in life Mary discovered her love for the Spanish language traveling to Spain, Costa Rica, and Mexico. Puerto Vallarta was like her second home and the place where she made many lifelong friends. She studied Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico, at the University of Manitoba and with her private teacher and good friend Felix. This brought her cherished opportunities to work as an interpreter during the PanAm Games and the Mexican Pavilion at Folklorama.

Mary was fortunate to share over a decade with loving partner Harold Matthews who preceded her in 2019.

Mary will be forever loved and remembered by her four children, Marnie Anderson, Jim (Janet) Johnson, Dave (Karen) Johnson, Nancy Bornn, eight grandchildren, Jeff (Corina) Anderson and Devon Anderson, Wesley and Kurtis Johnson, Nicole (Jeff) Kosmynka and Malaina Johnson, Alyssa and Matthew Bornn and two great-grandchildren Maia Anderson and Delia Kosmynka.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Oakview Place for their compassionate care. In honor of Mary's wishes no formal service will be held. Cremation has taken place and Mary has been laid to rest beside her loving sister Elsie. The family will hold a private Celebration of Life at a future date.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice.

  • I was so sad to hear of Mary’s passing. Mary and I were more than a client and stylist. We had known each other for many years and enjoyed each other’s company. There was always a laugh and a story. Everyone knew her and would join in the conversation when she came to get her hair done. We all know she wasn’t shy and that’s what everyone liked about her. Rest in peace Mary. - Posted by: Irene Armbruster (Hairstylist and friend) on: Nov 24, 2024
