GEORGE BARRIE ATKINSON

August 29, 1940 - May 24, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barrie, loving husband, father, son, and grandfather, who peacefully passed away at Rockyview Hospital, Calgary, Alberta.

He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 61 years Betty, son Bob (Pat), daughter Beth (Mike), and grandchildren Andrew (Christine), and CJ. Barrie is also survived by his sister-in-law Kathy (Bob), brothers-in-law Wally (Heather) and Tom (Linda), as well as nieces and nephews, Tom, Richard, Duncan, Robin, Sean, Shannon and Darren. Barrie was predeceased by his parents, George and Dorothy Atkinson.

Barrie was born and raised in Charleswood, Winnipeg, Manitoba. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1962. He became a meteorologist with Environment Canada for his lifetime career working in Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland before returning to Winnipeg for the majority of his career.

Barrie had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, camping, sailing (Canadian Power & Sail Squadron, Gimli Yacht Club, Silver Harbour Sailing Club), genealogy, philately and bridge, as well as serving as lay reader at his local Anglican church.

Unfortunately, in his final years, he suffered from and succumbed to Parkinson’s disease. Special thanks to all his doctors and the staff of Foothills Hospital, Cambridge Manor Long Term Care Home and Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, for caring for him.

As per Barrie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service and reception will be held in Barrie’s honour on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew’s Woodhaven Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Interment will take place Friday, August 16 at 11:00 AM, in the family plot next to his parents, in the Four Prophets section of Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • We have many wonderful memories of Barrie through our involvement with the Silver Harbour Sailing club as well as being neighbours in our RV community. Barrie always had entertaining stories and sage advice to share usually at one of our many happy hour gatherings at the marina. Sue and I extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Betty and family. - Posted by: Craig and Sue Mackenzie (Friend) on: Aug 15, 2024

  • I am saddened to hear of Barrie’s passing. He was a man of many interests. I remember him visiting my father (his uncle) in my dad’s later years and poring over my dad’s stamp collection with great interest. My sincere condolences to all the family. - Posted by: Diane Bannatyne (Cousin) on: Aug 11, 2024

  • I was so saddened to hear of Barrie's passing. I had the great pleasure of working with Barrie at Environment Canada in Winnipeg in 1991. Though I was only at Environment Canada for 6 months while the regular secretary was on maternity leave, I had the opportunity to get to know Barrie quite well and was privileged and honored to count him among my friends! I remember I arrived at work one day with chills and a fever and though I wanted to barrel through my workday, Barrie was very concerned and insisted that I go to a doctor. So Barrie accompanied me to the walk-in clinic in Eaton place and it was determined I had a severe bladder infection. Barrie then insisted on driving me home and seeing me safely inside my apartment. Then he "scolded" me in his teasing way and told me he had better not see me at work for at least 3 days and that he would "check on" me soon. And check he did! He called me the next afternoon to see how I was feeling and the day after that he dropped by for about 5 minutes to see me. That is just who Barrie was! He was kind and caring and always concerned for others. He loved to tease me at work and if I was taking too long to play solitaire in the lunchroom, he would stand over my shoulder and day "black queen on red king" until I couldn't stand it anymore and would shoo him away! One day, I told him I was moving to a new apartment and that I had to leave the curtains behind at the old apartment and didn't have any for my new apartment. So Barrie being Barrie, went home and told his wife Betty, and a few days later, he showed up with NEW CURTAINS for me that his beautiful wife had actually MADE for me! I never had the pleasure to meet Betty to thank her in person, but that gesture has stuck with me all these years later and showed me what amazing people Barrie & Betty are and what an impact Barrie had on the life of someone he only knew for a very short time. I still have the curtains! When Barrie knew me, my last name was Bayes, I married Greg Stansfield who worked just down the hall in Atmospheric Environment Services. My sincere Condolences to Betty and the family on the loss of a wonderful man. - Posted by: Debra Stansfield (Former work colleague) on: Aug 10, 2024
