It is with sadness that the family of Walter Schmidt announce his passing on Monday, July 22, 2024, at the age of 96 years.
Walter is remembered by his daughters Karen (Michael) Wagner and Diane (James) Schmidt; granddaughters Kristin Wagner and Erin Sutherland; sister-in-law Elsie; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Cecile; brothers James and Irvin; and sister-in-law Margret.
Dad left the family farm as a very young man to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. While stationed in Ottawa, Walter met Cecile, his wife-to-be. After they married, he found purpose in police work (Ottawa and Deep River) but felt compelled to return to Manitoba in 1962. There, he and Cecile raised their daughters and sent them off into the world from their home near Pinawa. Walter and Cecile enjoyed their retirement together until her passing in 2012.
Dad was a wanderer all his life, revisiting the areas around Riding Mountain Park and his family’s homestead, in travels and in memory. He planted trees as long as he could and considered the trees and wildlife of “the Park” and his boyhood roaming of its boundaries among his greatest treasures.
Dad’s ashes will be interred at Grandview Cemetery in June 2025, in the valley between the Riding and the Duck Mountains.

Dear Karen, Diane and families, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your father. May the love and memories you shared provide strength and comfort. In the course of my family research, I only recently found out that Walter was a cousin of my father.
