Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I first met Louis as a student when taking some of his courses in the Plant Science department many years ago now. I remember being so fascinated with his breadth of knowledge in the horticultural field to the extent that it became career shaping in my case. My association with him continued after graduation upon ultimately assuming responsibility for the Plant Science research greenhouses. I remember it was always a bit of a struggle to accommodate space in the spring to generate the bedding plant trials for his research. Somehow we always did it and much credit must be given to all the other researchers for making way for his work for a short period of time. Louis touched so many people’s lives with his research accomplishments, outreach work and teaching that it is quite extraordinary. I have encountered many people who took his courses at night and they all remembered him fondly. The last time I personally spoke with him was when he was kind enough to attend my retirement reception. It was so humbling to think he would make that effort on my behalf. It just further demonstrates how kind a person he was. - Posted by: Ian Brown (Coworker ) on: Sep 02, 2024

  • I first met Louis in the early 60’s while attending U of M, Agriculture. While attending university, I worked every summer in the Plant Science Department. Louis was just down the hall from our Laboratory and became he was only 10 years older, treated the summer student workers like friends. He was also a big model railroad fan and was active in that community. Another great guy gone. - Posted by: Wayne Moore (Student- friend) on: Sep 01, 2024

  • We met Louis three months ago when we first moved into the assisted living facility. He introduced us as his new neighbours down the hallway on the first day if I remember correctly. When he found out that we were Blue Bomber fans we made a strong connection. He would always make comments about their progress, either good or bad. He also made comments about other CFL teams and their records. Louis was a really nice man and I for one miss him greatly even though we knew him for such a short time. Louis, we will certainly miss you. Judy and Ed. - Posted by: Ed and Judy Bailey (Acquaintances ) on: Aug 24, 2024
