Lois Ross’ spirit joined her dearly missed son, Chris, on August 25, 2024.
Lois was born in Brandon, Manitoba on September 1, 1949, to George and Marjorie Oliver of Rounthwaite. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert Ross, the same week she graduated from a one-year teacher training program at Brandon University, and began a career in education that spanned 40 years. Bob and Lois welcomed two sons, Chris and Vincent.
The early years were busy. Juggling raising a family, working full time, and studying at night/summer school Lois managed to earn three degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education (Gold Medalist), Masters of Education in Administration (I.O.D.E. Award for the most innovative Masters Project). She also earned a Level 1: Administrator’s certificate, and Level 2: Principal’s Certificate. She deserved a medal for perseverance as it took 20 years to accomplish those goals. She taught most grades K - 8 and was appointed Vice-Principal and Principal. Retiring after 35 years in the Brandon School Division Lois discovered she still was not finished with her education, and as appointed Director of Field Experience at Brandon University for five additional years she placed student teachers provincially, nationally, and internationally. She enjoyed facilitating the student teachers’ dreams of becoming educators a reality. It was the perfect way to cap off her own 40 year career in education.
Following her second retirement, Lois and Bob relocated to Winnipeg. Lois felt privileged to help look after Rex and Rosabella part-time before they went to school. She cherished every moment they shared: enjoying experiments, day-trips, reading, and just plain having fun making memories together. In her spare time Lois enjoyed belonging to the St. James and Transcona Flower Arranging groups where everybody learned together. The annual personalized family calendars, which marked all special occasions, were labours of love for her.
Lois' memory will live on in the hearts of her husband Bob; son Vincent (Maribel); grandchildren, Rex and Rosabella; brother George (Dianne) Oliver; sisters, Brenda (Steven) Pennycook, Glenda Speers; sisters and brother-in-law, Laura (Rick) Wright, David (Vivian) Watson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois will enjoy a reunion with those who predeceased her: son Christopher Ross; parents, George and Marjorie Oliver; in-laws, Lyle and Beulah Watson; brother-in-law Gerald Speers; and grandparents.
The family will cherish Lois’ memory privately, as per her wishes there will not be a funeral.

I am so grateful I had the opportunity to meet Lois this past summer. She is one of my mom's best friends and it took 50 years for our paths to cross! She and Bob came out to Gimli and took us out for supper. We had a lovely visit and I felt lucky because I got to sit right beside Lois and I learned so much about her in person. I'm glad I got to meet her and now when mom tells me stories of their youth - I have a direct picture of Lois and her wonderful personality. - Posted by: Sara (Friend) on: Sep 19, 2024

Lois and I were neighbours and Rounthwaite school mates. Though we lost touch as we went on to high school, university, and our careers and family, I always thought of her on her birthday, Sept. 1st. What a distinguished career she had and how hard she worked for it! I extend my sincere sympathy to her siblings and her family. - Posted by: Lynda (Roberts) Sclater (Childhood Friend) on: Sep 14, 2024

Lois and I lived on the same street in Brandon for many years, and we both worked for Brandon School Division. In addition, we realized we had met earlier as children with connections in Bunclody, Manitoba.I remember attending her 40th? birthday party. I was so sorry to learn of her passing. She was quiet, kind and very capable. My sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Carol Harvey (friend and colleague) on: Sep 01, 2024

I met Lois quite a few years ago at flower arranging in St. James. Later our new group met at Transcona Seniors where a new flower arranging group started. Lois was the organizer, she took pictures of all arrangements and headed the program. She was the loveliest person, never an unkind word was said, she was a perfectionist in all she did. My condolences to Bob and the family. I will never forget her she was one of a kind. Rest in peace Lois - Posted by: Bev Hooper (Friend) on: Aug 31, 2024

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lois' Family. Lois' dedication to Family and Friends was unwavering. I enjoyed working with Lois at the University, her sense of humor kept was in stitches and the coffee breaks lively. Although we didn't get to see her and Bob as often after they moved to Winnipeg our sporadic visits and phone calls kept us close. Rest in Peace Lois, you are always in our thoughts. - Posted by: Shirleen & Ralph (Friend) on: Aug 31, 2024
