ERNEST (ERNIE) ROMANIUK

Ernest Romaniuk (Ernie), 91, of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away Monday, June 24, 2024, with his daughters at his side. He was born to Stephen and Katherine Romaniuk on January 19, 1933, in Pine River, Manitoba.

He is lovingly remembered by his three daughters, Marie Pelekh (Borys), Teresa Ripley (Dave), Donna Romaniuk, sister Nadia Basaraba and cousin Bill Romaniuk; four grandchildren, Steven (Kim), Anna-Marie (Kris), Alana (Brent), and Matthias; and six great-grandchildren, Emily, Alexa, Abigail, Mason, Nolin, and Lucas, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ernie was known for definitive opinions which he shared readily and he had a memory like a steel trap. He could remember details of umpteen things and events. In addition, he was a giver of nicknames which included close friends, family, and even strangers.

The Pine River Hotel and Alouette Hotel in The Pas were the businesses he owned. They provided a history of multiple memories along with the trucking business his father started and he managed.

Ernie loved to hunt large game and birds; memories abound of pictures of a moose in the back of the truck and many family pictures show his daughters holding a bird in each hand. He also loved being outdoors and hanging out with friends. Another best time for him was playing cribbage; he loved the game.

Travelling in Canada and the USA and even a once in a lifetime trip to Germany during Oktoberfest created many memories too. Other highlights were travelling to Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Churchill during the polar bear season.

The best times for him were always being with his family at various holiday and social events. He started all events with an array of multiple treats and goodies stowed away in his vehicle. Treats of all kinds of pop and chocolate bars plus potential grocery items for you to stock up on your home pantry.

The great-grandkids thought calling him Papa was really "Poppa" because of all the soft drinks. His kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and friends were on the receiving end of his abundant supply of food and drinks. He even kept a steady flow of treats for the teams at Donna's workplaces.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your charity of choice. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the 5E and 5B Medicine teams of the St. Boniface Hospital during Ernie's hospitalization.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in the near future. A private interment will follow at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Uncle Ernie was a man of intelligence, of his time, and compassionately considerate. He was indeed a giver a nicknames, and for a few times, now that I think of it mostly when almost no one was around, he'd call me Timmy Mulligan. Truly he could tell the difference. In life. Miss you. RIP - Posted by: timothy mark basaraba (nephew) on: Sep 04, 2024

  • To all family members and friends: My sincere condolences to all family and friends of “E.R. from P.R.” I had the pleasure and good fortune of getting to know Ernie when he owned the Pine River Hotel. Going to the annual Hotel Convention with Ernie was always an enjoyable but sometimes “scary” adventure!!! His quick wit and unique sense of humour made him well liked by everyone in the hospitality industry. Ernie was one of a kind and will be truly missed. RIP old friend. - Posted by: Cal Chute (Business Supplier ) on: Aug 31, 2024
