MARIA DANAKAS

Peacefully, on September 13, two months short of her 92nd birthday, Maria Danakas (born Stamatakos) passed away. May her memory be eternal.

She leaves behind her loving family: son Peter, daughter-in-law Fatima, grandchildren Maria and Costa P Danakas, son John and grandson Costa J Danakas, and her brother Ted Stamatakos, as well as nieces and nephews.

Maria was born in Molaoi, Lakonia, Greece. The eighth of nine children, she emigrated to Canada in 1958 to join her fiancé Kostas and they were married that same year. Together they raised their family and established the successful Transcona eatery, Dal’s Restaurant. She was a loyal friend, a devoted wife and mother, a hard worker and an engaged community member, helping primarily in the kitchen to support philanthropic efforts.

People here and in Greece deeply appreciated her friendship and love, her wit and memory for poems and lyrics and her enthusiasm for cooking. She took particular delight in preparing dishes for her children and grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday September 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3P 0S2, with interment to follow at Waverley Memorial Gardens.

  • I worked for Dal's Restaurant (Regent Park) back in the eighties and remember Mrs. Danakas quite well. She would come in and help in the kitchen when we had big orders. She was always very pleasant and nice to work with. I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Peter and John on the loss of their beloved mother. RIP Mrs. Danakas. - Posted by: Debbie McLeod (Former Employee) on: Sep 14, 2024

  • I remember eating at Dal’s Restaurant and always having freshly made bread it always felt like home, going there. Sometimes we would would get an apology because the bread was not quite ready, but, it was always worth the wait. Many fond memories of all the times spent there. Either Mr. or Mrs. Danakas were there to ask us how our meal was and it was always superb. Maria, may God’s angels guide you on your journey home to your beloved husband. Au revoir (until we see you again in paradise). - Posted by: Lucie (Friend of Pete and Fatima) on: Sep 14, 2024
