DR. CLIFFORD LEVI
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Clifford Levi - beloved husband, father, and physician. Cliff passed away on September 15, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with leukemia.
Cliff was born in Winnipeg on May 28, 1951. He was the youngest of three siblings. He attended Grant Park High School, graduated from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine in 1975, and completed his Residency in Diagnostic Radiology in 1979. In 1980, he joined the department of Ultrasound at the Health Sciences Centre.
Cliff had an outstanding career in medicine. He practiced for over 44 years as a Radiologist specializing in Ultrasound. He began working in the field while it was in its infancy, and contributed greatly to its development. He contributed over 30 papers to peer-reviewed journals and 27 chapters in leading imaging textbooks. He was loved and respected by his colleagues, and viewed the Ultrasound department as his second family. He served as the department's Section Head for 22 years.
Cliff leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Carol. He was a dedicated father and will be missed dearly by his children, Kim and Jeremy. Despite his busy schedule and long work hours, he was always present when his family needed him. He would do anything for those around him. He had a strong moral compass, and was known for his exceptional kindness, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humour. He was an avid stargazer, golfer, and guitarist.
Services were held on September 18, 2024 at the Chesed Shel Emes. Dr. Marvin Slutchuk, Cliff's physician and friend, led a beautiful service that highlighted Cliff's character and impact on those around him.
The family would like to recognize the team at CancerCare Manitoba, especially Dr. James Johnston, for the exceptional quality of care Cliff received throughout his treatment. We also wish to express our thanks to Dr. Ted Lyons, Cliff's friend and coworker of 46 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the charity of your choice.

My husband Larry and I lived for over a decade in the childhood house of Cliff on Cordova Street. Or daughter and their son went to school together and our families were connected from way back. Cliff left an indelible memory on all those who knew him in his lifetime. Everyone thought of him as the kindest soul. He would extend himself to you. He had a great sense of humour and a dedication to his family that knew no boundaries. We feel very blessed to have had Cliff in our life as he was without question one of those special people you come across. Our condolences to his loving family - to Carol, Kim and Jeremy our hearts break for you. Harriet Berkal & Larry Sarbit - Posted by: Harriet Berkal (Friends ) on: Oct 06, 2024

Cliff grew up on Cordova Street, in a house my husband and I bought decades later. The vibes were good in that home. What can one say about Cliff? He was such a gentle soul who extended himself to others. His love for his family was rock solid. He had the warmest smile and a twinkle in his eye as we would enjoy the odd dinner together with him and his soulmate Carol. Losing Cliff is a tremendous loss not just to his family but in his work as a doctor. I can’t count the number of times he helped me through medical crisis. He leaves a huge void. May his memory be a blessing. Our condolences to Carol, Kim and Jeremy. Harriet Berkal & Larry Sarbit - Posted by: Harriet Berkal (Friend ) on: Oct 05, 2024

We express our deepest sympathy to Dr. Levi's family, and special thoughts for his son, Jeremy. Dr. Jeremy Levi was my ophthalmologist at the Vancouver Eye Centre and I was fortunate to be his last transplant patient before he returned to Winnipeg. Dr. Levi, your confident approach to your work was refreshing and instilled confidence in your patient. Dale and I are so sorry, and pray the days ahead will be better. They will be, we know. - Posted by: Dale & Joan Dale Stewart (Dr. Jeremy Levi, Vancover BC) on: Sep 28, 2024

It is sad to hear of Cliff's passing. My wife Debbie and I would like express our heartfelt condolences to his family. As classmates, Cliff made medical school fun. Although we chose different medical paths, we often met in the HSC Ultrasound department to review cases. He was one of many in the department who thought of the patient first. Cliff will be missed, but never forgotten! - Posted by: Robert Lotocki (Friend and co-worker) on: Sep 28, 2024

I am saddened to learn of Cliff's death, and send my deepest condolences to his family. I first met Cliff in Winnipeg at one of Ted Lyons' ultrasound teaching courses in the early 1980s. Our paths crossed many times over the years through the Canadian Association of Radiologists and other societies. I was always struck by Cliff's wisdom and his kind demeanor. - Posted by: Ian Hammond (Colleague) on: Sep 27, 2024

I knew Cliff from our time in the Winnipeg chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. We worked together closely on the club's council and he showed a tremendous amount of care, with a quiet and confident calmness to all of our decisions. I'll always appreciate his approach to resolving issues and how he guided us through various club matters. He made us and the organization better. More personally, I will forever treasure our time spent under the stars. At one of our first star parties together, Cliff and I were still fairly new to the club and became friends almost immediately (despite the ~40 year age gap, heh). I think we both recognized that we each needed a hand and wanted to lessen how much we were asking the more senior members for help. He had his 14 inch truss tube dobsonian and I had my 70mm refractor. Both of us were equally excited to look through each other's telescope, as we jointly set to hunting deep sky objects that neither of us had looked at before, comparing the different views we were getting, pointing out some subtle differences that may or may not have even been there. It was a wonderful experience and one that just makes you feel good to be human. We attended many more star parties after that and I will be forever grateful for having had the opportunity to share the night sky with him. To his family and friends, please accept my deepest condolences. He'll truly be missed. - Posted by: Brenden Petracek (Astronomy friend) on: Sep 23, 2024

I just heard about Clifford's passing and am shocked. I knew Clifford through our common interest in astronomy. I had the pleasure of driving to Nebraska with him to see an eclipse. I can't think of anyone I'd rather spend hours in a car with. Clifford was a kind and soft spoken Man with a great sense of humor. I will truly miss him. My condolences to his family and all his friends. - Posted by: Ron Berard (Astronomy friend) on: Sep 22, 2024

My condolences to family and friends of Cliff. I went to school with Cliff from Grade 7-9 - a very long time ago. Yet, I have clear memories of regularly going over to Cliff's house, down in the basement where we played pool on his pool table - especially Friday nights. He was the only friend with a pool table (I had the ping pong table. Cliff's mom would always bring us tasty snacks too. Cliff, of course, was the best at pool but he never lorded it over any of us. Cliff, even in those days, seemed like a gentlemen...just a very, good guy, smart, a mench and a good friend. I am not surprised that he became an outstanding physician in Winnipeg - the seeds were clear. I wished that I had a chance to see Cliff again. May good memories and inspirations of his life bring some solace to friends and family... - Posted by: Michael Miloff (Friend with Cliff in Grade 7-9) on: Sep 21, 2024

I worked with Cliff for over thirty years. As Mentor, Colleague, Collaborator, but most importantly as a friend. If I had to think of one word to sum up his character it would be a Gentleman. He was someone you could always lean on and trust. He was also a great consultant to the Winnipeg medical community and a world leader in his field in ultrasound. Most of all, he was dedicated to his family. Cliff I will miss you.To Carol, Jeremy and Kim you have my heartfelt condolences. - Posted by: Sid Dashefsky (Co Worker ) on: Sep 18, 2024
