Our dear Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma, "Betty" Elizabeth Margaret (nee McDiarmid) Monthey) passed away on September 14, 2024 at Concordia Place.
Mom displayed her strong independent spirit right to the end. In her century of life, she went from being a reluctant farm girl, with her nose in a book, to being a successful school administrator. She grew up on a farm in Helston, Manitoba riding in a horse and buggy or horse and sled to a one room schoolhouse. No electricity, indoor plumbing, telephone, cars or airplanes. During her high school years, she "boarded" with family who lived in Gladstone to complete her education.
Mom attended United College and achieved her B.A. During university, she lived at her future mother-in-law's boarding home, where she met a dashing air force pilot, Herb. Betty and Herb loved to go out dancing and play bridge with their friends. Mom worked at Great West Life Insurance Company prior to her marriage. After Betty married, she moved with Herb to Port Arthur, Ontario. She stayed home to raise her three children. In 1956, the family moved back to the East Kildonan area of Winnipeg. When Herb's health began to decline, Betty returned to University to complete her teaching certificate and her Bachelor of Education. Betty became the primary wage earner long before that was a common role for women. Betty taught in Seven Oaks School Division and eventually became principal of Belmont School. As well, she continued to care for Herb and her children. She met these life changes and challenges with grace.
When Betty retired, she enjoyed working in her garden, bridge groups, her Leighton Avenue "wine and game gang," and her continued love of reading. Betty was a member of Immanuel United Church where she enjoyed attending and volunteering. With her son Gord's assistance, Betty and Herb enjoyed winter vacations in Palm Springs, Arizona and Florida. After Herb's passing, Mom loved to travel with friends and family. She enjoyed visiting family in British Columbia and Indiana and always welcomed them home for Christmas and summer visits. Mom will be long remembered for her delicious apple pies and butter tarts. Mom traveled far and wide to places such as England, France, Portugal, Hawaii, Panama Canal, and Caribbean.
Mom moved to Concordia Village 3, in 2009. While there, she enjoyed the camaraderie of many friends and was an exceptionally good friend to many. From exercise class, bridge playing, and social events she enjoyed a full life at the Village. Mom spent her final years at Concordia Place. Her family is appreciative of the care she received there. Kim and Jan are so grateful for the care and support provided by Gord in Mom's final years.
Mom leaves behind the legacy of her family and the values she instilled in her children, Jan Trosky (Jim), Kim Little (John), and Gord; her grandchildren, Garrett (Connie), Erin (Garrett) and Elliott (Lauren), and her great-grandchildren, Welz and Emery Trosky, Caroline and John Patrick or "JP" Quinn, and Cayden Little. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Betty was predeceased by her husband Herb and grandson Kyle.
A family celebration of Betty's life will occur at a later date. If so inclined, please do an act of kindness for someone or donate to a charity of your choice.
