Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALICE KULYK
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alice Kulyk (née Mateyko) - devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother (Baba), who departed this world peacefully after a brief but brave battle with cancer on September 19, 2024. Alice shared 51 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Walter. Together, they raised three beautiful sons - Christian (Tamara), Andrew (Jody), and Benjamin (Ashley).
Alice adored her four grandchildren - Lacey, Cooper, Layla and Hanna, and cherished every moment spent with them, enriching their lives with love, stories and art lessons.
She is also survived by her sister Donna (Gordon) Mendres, brother-in-law Taras (Laura), sister-in-law Marianne (Dave) Matwychuk and her beloved nieces and nephews - Paul, Krista, Larysa, Andrianna, and Aaron and her godchildren.
Alice will be remembered for her kindness, her creativity, and the deep love she had for her family, particularly her grandchildren, with whom she shared her heart and soul.
Alice immigrated to Canada from Ukraine at the age of seven, with her parents, Eugenia and Michael and big sister Donna, where she began building a life full of love, creativity and family. The family settled in Point Douglas and eventually moved to East Kildonan. She graduated from Miles Mac in 1971 and then studied Commercial Art at Red River Polytech.
A gifted artist and patient teacher, Alice shared her artistic passions not only with her family, but also by inspiring countless art students over the years. She encouraged them and made them feel special. Alice also achieved master status as a gardener, and was featured in home and gardening TV shows and magazines, taking joy in cultivating beauty in both her art and her gardens. Another great joy for Alice was finding wild mushrooms in the Belair forest. She was known for her love of picking, cooking and eating mushrooms, and she passed along her knowledge to her family and friends. For many years, Alice and Walter enjoyed travelling the world, making adventures and memories in places like Singapore, Bali, Thailand, Finland, Ukraine, Europe and Hawaii to name but a few; especially loving their regular winter getaways to Palm Springs and Mexico.
Alice will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit lives on through the art she created, the lives she touched, and all the memories made and cherished by her family and dear friends. May she rest in peace. We love you Baba.
A Requiem service will be celebrated for Alice by Fr. Bohdan Lukie, CSsR on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Avenue, in Winnipeg. Family inurnment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alice’s memory to the Lubov SSMI Foundation or the Shevchenko Foundation.

So very sorry to hear of Alice's passing. She was a wonderful lady who accomplished much and who was very much loved. I was there, in small town Saskatchewan, when Donna and Alice first came from Ukraine. I was designated at school to help them learn English. Then we all came to Wpg and the Ukrainian community here. Sincere condolences to the Kulyk family. Vichnaya Pamyat from Carol (Wachniak) Martindale - Posted by: Carol Anne Martindale (acquaintance from many years ago ) on: Sep 27, 2024
