DONNA IRENE GAREAU

(nee PNIOWSKY)

Peacefully, Donna Irene Gareau (nee: Pniowsky) passed away on September 23, 2024, at Luther Care Home in Winnipeg at the age of 84.

Donna was born July 20, 1940, to Wasyl and Theodora Pniowsky in Zolochiv, Western Ukraine. At the age of two Donna and her family had to leave their beloved homeland due to the Second World War. Wasyl passed away during this time, and Donna and her mother moved to Austria. In 1948, after five years in Austria, Donna and her mother immigrated to Canada.

In 1949, Theodora Pniowsky married Michael Kurylko and the family settled in the Pine Ridge community, just outside of Winnipeg. Donna lived there until the age of 12, attending Corona School. She then moved to Winnipeg to live with her older sister, Jean and brother-in-law, Bordan. She attended St. Nicholas School (now Immaculate Heart of Conception), Sisler High School, and Tec Voc., from where she graduated.

Donna studied piano and loved to sing. She belonged to the Millenium, Yaroslav Szurs, and Dumka choirs, and also was a member of the Holy Eucharist Parish Choir.

She also loved gardening and had a beautiful yard which many of her friends admired.

Donna worked for Carpathia Credit Union for 15 years and then worked at North Winnipeg Credit Union for 10 years.

Her greatest love and joy were her beloved grandchildren: Yvonne, Melissa, Kevin and Kristin, who will miss her terribly.

Donna leaves to mourn her daughters, Colleen Ann (Dennis) and Lana Marie (Wayne) as well as stepdaughters Lisa and Janelle, and many step-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents Theodora and Wasyl, her stepfather, Micheal, brothers Lubomyr (Leo), Yaroslaw (Jerry) and sister Eugena (Jean), her uncle, Wasyl Hrynevich and

cousin John Soloway.

A Prayer service will take place at Holy Eucharist Church, 505 Watt Street on Friday, October 4, 2024 at 12:00 noon, after which there will be refreshments in the Church basement. A private family burial service will then take place at Glen Eden Cemetery, 4477 Main St., West St. Paul.

Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.

WE WILL MISS YOU DEARLY

  • My sincere condolences to Donna's family on your loss. I met Donna through the senior's club at Holy Eucharist Church. She was most welcoming to new members with her ready smile and kind words. On occasion my late husband and I were able to offer Donna a ride home from the card club and in return she was often generous with bounty from her garden. May the love of God give you peace and the caring of friends give you comfort. Vichnaya Pamyat. - Posted by: Vicki Lazaruk (Holy Eucharist Church ) on: Sep 28, 2024
