ROSS YARNELL
After a long and productive life, enriched by the love of family and loyal friends, Ross passed away on September 29, 2024, at the age of 92.
Born in 1932 in Winnipeg to John and Marguerite Yarnell, Ross graduated from Kelvin High School in 1949. He earned his Bachelor of Law at the University of Manitoba in 1955 and was admitted to the bar in 1956. He went on to have a successful career for more than 50 years with the law firm Fillmore & Riley and was awarded the designation “Queen’s Counsel” in 1978.
Ross was the loving husband of 60 years to Shelagh McCulley. He was a devoted dad to Jennifer, Patrick (Tanis), and Derek (Stewart). He doted on his grandchildren, Riel, Ziggy, Olivia and Eric, who knew him affectionately as “Popie”.
Ross Yarnell was the consummate volunteer. He served on many boards including Grace Hospital, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Reh-Fit Centre. He served for many years as chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Westminster United Church Foundation. He also served as chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
Ross enjoyed skiing, squash, tennis and especially golf. He belonged to St. Charles Country Club for over 50 years, serving on the board of directors, and as Club Captain in 1993. He was also a member of St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland and enjoyed playing in the town matches on the old course.
Ross and Shelagh travelled extensively. They chose as their winter home Zihuatanejo, Mexico, where they were welcomed into the hearts and homes of Mexican friends. Ross left a legacy of love and learning in ‘Zihua’ as he taught English there to teenagers for ten years.
Closer to home, Ross’s special place was the family cottage at Victoria Beach. Sharing time there with family and friends brought him endless joy.
He was predeceased by his brother John (Elizabeth). He leaves to miss him deeply and love him forever his wife Shelagh, their three children and his beloved grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Joyce (Gerry) with whom he shared a strong bond.
A service will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., on Tuesday October 8, 2024, at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

What a warm, caring person. I never saw Ross, without feeling happier for the experience. - Posted by: Mike Ryall (Son of colleague at Fillmore & Riley) on: Oct 04, 2024

Our condolences Shelagh and family. Our chance meeting in Zihua, on the street and at La Ceiba, was an event I have mentioned often to friends. It started with Ross chatting with my sister-in-law and ended up with our Strathmillan School connection, and my brother Paul! It was lovely spending some time with you both. You are remembered by Zihua folks as well! Take care Shelagh! - Posted by: Leona McInnes (Friend) on: Oct 04, 2024
