VIOLA KIRCHEN

(neé STRANGER)

July 29, 1929 - September 24, 2024

With great sadness we share that our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Viola Kirchen, has peacefully passed at Seven Oaks Hospital in Winnipeg on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

Viola was predeceased by her mother Victoria Kipling and stepfather Walter Stranger, her younger sisters, Helen, Sophie, Jeannie, Mayme, and her husband Edwin Kirchen, daughters, Elizabeth and Victoria, son Gordon Stranger, grandson Philip Stranger, granddaughter Tonya Kirchen and great-grandson Philip Stranger.

Left to mourn her passing is her sister Phyllis, and her children: Shirley, Lawrence (Alice), Corene, Brenda (Wendell), Barbara (Ashley), Kenny (Jen), Diane, Jeannette, Dorothy. She had 29 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and many family, cousins, nieces and nephews in Winnipeg, Selkirk, Peguis First Nation, Brokenhead First Nation, Sechelt Nation, Thunder Bay and USA.

Viola was born and raised on the former St. Peter’s Indian Reserve by her stepfather Walter Stranger and mother Victoria Kipling and later moved to Selkirk. She married Edwin “Eddie” Kirchen and moved to Winnipeg. She had part time jobs, but her primary activity was caring for her children and being a homemaker. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren and even though she did not have much she would often take in others that were in need of a place to sleep and something to eat. Taking the children on long walks along the riverbank in the evening to tire them out and telling them stories from the past about growing up on the banks of the Red River north of Selkirk was common pastime.

In later years, with advancing age and health issues she lived with her daughter Brenda (Wendell) and Dorothy who were devoted caregivers for many years until her passing.

May the memory of her love and caring for her children and grandchildren never be forgotten in all our hearts and minds.

The family would like to express their appreciation and thanks to the caring doctors and staff at Seven Oaks Hospital. Chi miigwetch!

A Memorial Service will be held on October7, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, and at 11:15 a.m. a Graveside interment at Brookside Cemetery. Funeral reception to be announced.
