JOANNE JULIA MACDONELL
With sadness, we are sharing the loss of our beloved Sister, Aunt, and Friend, Joanne Macdonell.
Joey was predeceased by her infant siblings, Mary Jean and Alexander, her sisters, Glenrose Turner and Claire Horsley, and brother Angus Macdonell, as well as her parents, Judge Ambrose Roy Macdonell and Muriel Hortense Leclair. Left to mourn is her sister Ellie, and brother-in-law Don Kilimnik, who were always very close. There are many nieces and nephews from the Kilimnik, Turner, Horsley and Macdonell clans, and many friends, old and new, who will be missing her.
Joey was born June 25, 1942, and attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart on Westgate. She was a proud graduate of St. Paul’s College and University of Manitoba. She cherished the lifelong friendships she made during her school years. Thoughout her career, she taught high school English in the St. Boniface School Division. Love of English extended to being a passionate and voracious reader who always had great recommendations for the next interesting read.
Joey was a great Aunt to grow up with, always having close relationships with her nieces and nephews. We have fond memories of Joey creating fun and interesting activities for us, like teaching us how to write with our toes, make pulling taffy, or taking us on vacation to Florida. In recent years, she had a lot of joy when she became surrogate grandma to Hailee. Many friends from her early years, through to new neighbours, were very much a part of her life. Winter or summer, Joey would always be found wearing at least one cashmere. She appreciated beauty, design and a quality knit. Joey was an avid supporter of Winnipeg Harvest and a long-time volunteer. She was much loved by all of us and will be fondly remembered for her good company and exceptional kindness and generosity. She was direct, pithy and fiercely independent to the very end and will always be missed.
Cremation has taken place and burial of the ashes at St. Mary’s Cemetery will take place at a later date, along with a private Celebration of Life. Donations can be made to Harvest Manitoba.

Dear family of Joey, Neil and I just heard the news and are so sorry to hear about Joey’s passing in October. Our deepest condolences. As former neighbours on Cordova St, we got to know and enjoy Joey’s company while tending our lawn and gardens. She educated us on perennials, we talked about books, politics, home renos, the history and people of the neighbourhood, and of course cats. We were impressed by her independence, her dedication to helping others, and yes her no care attitude when it came to wearing her old cashmere sweaters while doing chores outside. Over the years I also adopted the ‘Joey style’, as Neil and I fondly call my wear and tear cashmeres from the Bay. I recalled she was a cancer survivor, and did worry now and then for her as she was thin as a wisp. And yet she exuded a great strength and a hearty laugh that I can still hear. I’m glad she found that nice townhouse to live in during her later years. But we have missed her and are very glad to have known her. Take care, and keep the good memories in your heart.
