EDWARD JOSEPH COUTU
Date of Passing: Oct 28, 2024
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD JOSEPH COUTU
After 80 years of doing things his way, Edward Joseph Coutu died the same way he lived, on his own terms. He left us in the early morning hours of Monday, October 28, 2024.
Edward was predeceased by his parents Phillip and Orize Coutu and his brother Roger Coutu.
He is survived by his daughter Melissa Harju (Timo) and his son Edward Jr. (Alexandra); their mother Maria Coutu; his four grandchildren; Erik, Markus, Edward Jr. and Sasha and his sisters Mary Jane and Louise, both of British Columbia.
After serving as the Assistant to the Minister of Defence, to the Honourable James Richardson, Edward bought his family’s funeral business in 1977. He took great pride in his business and expanded it to become the largest family-owned funeral business in Western Canada which included Waverley Memorial Gardens where he built the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, the first mausoleum of its kind. After selling the business in 1995, he decided to have his son join in him in opening a funeral home that would continue to provide the level of service the Coutu Family has been known for the past 130 years. Having his son Edward Jr. continue the tradition was a great source of pride for him.
In keeping with Ed’s wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial mass celebrating his life will be held Tuesday, November 12 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bernadette Parish, 820 Cottonwood Rd. A reception will follow at The Coutu Funeral Home, the house Big Ed built and was so very proud of, 680 Archibald Street.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Johan Jacobs and Dr. Joe Bueti for the exceptional care and the entire team at the HSC Dialysis Unit. The doctors, nurses and staff of Unit 2 at Foyer Valade for their incredible care, especially to Renee, Mac and Rose -because of you we felt he was lucky to be there.
In lieu of flowers, please take time to do something kind for another person.

The Coutu family and mine go way back to the 70's. I had the pleasure to know Ed and his son, during one of my careers. I must say that I enjoyed the joy that came from his personality. Always a smile. I know he made the "process" much more comforting for families. - Posted by: MS Laurie A Gydé (friend of the family) on: Nov 02, 2024
