JEAN MCGILL

1928 - 2024

Jean Bernice McGill (Jackson-Lowton) passed away on November 28, 2024 at Fairview Personal Care Home in Brandon. MB at the age of 96 Years.

Jean was born in Brandon on January 8, 1928. The only child of Stanley and Myrtle Jackson. She was raised on the family farm South of Hilton. Jean took her schooling at Hiltonmye school in Hilton.

In 1947 Jean married John Lowton. They raised their 3 daughters on their farm just 1 mile South of where Jean was raised.

In 1976 Jean moved to Belmont for the next 31 years. Jean married Jack McGill in 1984. Jack passed in 1986. Hilton and Belmont were home to Jean for almost 80 years.

In 2007 Jean moved to the Colonial Estates in Brandon where she soon became a part of another group of special friends.

In 2021 failing health forced Jean to make a tough decision. On December 30 she moved to the Fairview Personal Care Home where she remained until her passing.

Jean led a very long and productive life. As a young farm wife, Mom mastered the art of cleaning, cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, knitting and even lent a hand to the Hilton Ladies as they crafted their award-winning quilts. Following life on the farm, Jean's journey spanned careers with Sykes Groceteria, Stats Canada and Income Tax preparation. Mom always had a desire to learn.

Horse racing and curling were mom's sports passions. No doubt her love of harness racing stemmed back to her parents being involved in the industry. But it became a life-long passion as two of her daughters were heavily involved in the sport. With a picnic basket in one hand and an ice-cream pail of Butter Tarts in the other mom spent weekend after weekend following the Great Western Harness racing circuit. Not only enjoying the success of Sandra and Merv and later Ruth and Francis on the race track, she got to spend precious time with her grandsons. Jean also travelled to the west coast for winter holidays with Sandra and her family enjoying the races at Fraser Downs.

The grand ole game of curling was a source of much pleasure for mom. Being an active participant with the Hilton Ladies and enjoying many local spiels Jean amassed a few trophies. But mostly enjoyed the connections with fellow curlers. In 1993 and 2002 Jean enjoyed curling holidays with special friends at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Brandon. In 1995 Brandon hosted the Ford World Curling championship and once again Jean and her buddies were in the bleachers. When cable tv was finally available to rural communities' mom was content to watch from the comfort of her home.

For decades volunteering or giving a helping hand was the source of much happiness for Jean. Fowl suppers, Red Cross Medical Equipment, Communities in Bloom, United Churches, Hall Committee and History Books were a few of the organization's mom helped over the years.

Mom took great pride in her yard, keeping it looking its best. Even after moving to Brandon, her hanging baskets of Geraniums were for all to enjoy.

Mom enjoyed travelling with trips to the East Coast, West Coast, South for a cruise, Hawaii, Nebraska and California.
