BRENDA ANN DAVIES

May 14, 1939 – December 18, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of Brenda Ann Davies announces that Brenda, 85, of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away on December 18, 2024, from cancer. Her loved ones were with her when she passed.

Brenda was born in the far north, in Port Harrison, Quebec to Alan Fraser and Dorothy Burland. Her father worked at northern settlements for the Hudson’s Bay Company and sadly, he passed away when she was a young child. Brenda grew up in St. Vital. As a teenager at Glenlawn Collegiate she excelled and competed in synchronized swimming. Ron and Brenda met during high school, married in 1960 and were happily married for 64 years, spending many happy years living at Falcon Lake, Moth Lake and in Winnipeg.

In 1959, Brenda graduated from the Teacher’s College and began her career at Sherwood School. She would later teach at Frontenac School in Windsor Park and at Falcon Beach School. Her family roots led her in that direction - both Samuel Burland School and Burland Avenue were named after her grandfather. She was also a successful businesswoman, with her and Ron owning a hardware store and plumbing business as well as managing the post office at Falcon Lake.

Ron and Brenda were a great team in both their work and leisure ventures; they enjoyed entertaining large groups at the Falcon Lake house, with guests frequently arriving by snowmobile. Brenda looked forward to their annual RV trip to Mazatlán with the Falcon Lake crew, which they went on for 37 years!

Brenda also excelled at traditional homemaking activities, including entertaining, baking, cooking and sewing. Throughout her entire life, she made and adjusted new recipes; any recipe she flagged was worth eating! Her creativity emerged in her sewing; she made collections of stylish outfits for herself and her twin daughters, Charlene and Shelley. As a member of the West Hawk Lake United Church, she played piano as well as participated in the church choir. Brenda was an avid reader, especially of historical fiction, although trashy magazines were always welcome! She always enjoyed walking a beach, eating seafood, happy hour pontoon rides, snowmobiling, fishing with family, playing slot machines and watching sunsets.

Mom was always there for us any hour of the day or night with a meal along with a supportive shoulder. She will be dearly missed by her husband Ron; twin daughters, Charlene (Grant) and Shelley (Jean-Marc); her grandchildren, Breanne (Alex), Logan (Amanda), Matthew (Julian); and great-grandchildren, Austin, Eli, Emilia and Olivia. We love you and we always will. You will be in our thoughts forever.

We would like to thank Brenda’s doctor, Dr. Anne Durcan for the extraordinary care she consistently provided. We would also like to thank the WHRA Palliative Care Team. Your support during this challenging time was instrumental in her being able to pass at home, as she wished.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Monday, January 20, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Tache Salon, Norwood Hotel. Come express your sympathy, share some food, drinks, and a fond memory of Brenda.

Donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Siloam Mission in her honour.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • My heart breaks for Ron, Charlene, Shelley and family. Growing up at Falcon Lake and my parents were good friends with Ron & Brenda so I spent a lot of time with the family at Falcon Lake and Moth Lake. Brenda was always there to keep us girls busy and happy. Lots of great meals/snacks too! Charlene and I carried our children at the same time and we all watched them grow up together. Many memories of Logan and Ashley having fun with their grandparents. My Dad took Ashley often into town to pick up the mail from Brenda then next door for treats! Keep the memories close. Hugs to you all. - Posted by: Laurie McFarlane Van Elslander (Friend) on: Jan 19, 2025

  • Deepest condolences to you Ron, Charlene, Shelley and the grand-kids. I have so many fond memories of the times Al and I spent with you and Brenda at Moth Lake and Falcon Lake. All the gatherings, parties, snowmobile rides, pontoon excursions, fish fries, and the list goes on. We sure had great times. • Sending my deepest condolences to Ron, Charlene, Shelley and your families on the passing of Brenda. I often reminisce about my summer job working in the post office at Falcon Lake. I refer to it as the best job a university student could ever have! It was the best not because I got to spend my summers at the lake….but because I worked for Brenda. Brenda was the ultimate teacher. She had grown up with teachers…her grandfather….and her mother Dorothy who had been my mother’s teacher in elementary school. As a Education student myself during my time working at Falcon, she taught me many skills that I have carried with me in my own career in Education……and that I taught my daughter who is also an educator. She taught me organizational skills and how to prioritize tasks that needed to be done…..and she was always supportive and positive. As I still own the cottage at Falcon, I think of you…..The Davies family….as I drive by your former home. I also think of you when I pass by Moth Lake. Thinking of you all. - Posted by: Laurie (Biggar) Bracken (Employee and Falcon Lake Friend) on: Jan 11, 2025

  • I worked for Brenda in the Post Office as a young girl and she was a very smart business woman. Living with Char and Shelley, I was invited to the Davies home and was always welcomed with open arms and a beverage! Sorry for your loss and hope you remember all the wonderful times at Falcon and Moth Lakes. - Posted by: Pam Durston and Greg Ziemanski (Falcon Lake friends of Charlene and Shelley) on: Jan 04, 2025

  • What a great family and woman! Always helped me pick out my Red Devils and fishing lures at the hardware store across from Falcon Lake Drugstore. She also let me sell my Tribune paper to her customers back in the 70,s which really I can never forget her kindness and her spectacular smile and kind heart. It’s been many years. Memories never end! - Posted by: Ken Hamin (Friends of Falcon Lake ) on: Jan 04, 2025

  • Sincere condolences Ron, Charlene and Shelley. Although I mainly remember Brenda from all those years in Falcon Lake, my best memory is running into her and Ron on the beach in Mazatlan in the 90’s and joining the Falcon gang for Happy Hour. Sorry I will miss her Life Celebration but will be thinking of everyone on that day. - Posted by: Tracey Hamin (Friend) on: Jan 04, 2025
