Ray Smith was a valued friend and baseball teammate. His positive nature was infectious and a pleasure to be around. We fought together many games on the diamond and Ray was as steady as they come. He was a rock on our infield and I always felt reassured when I looked out at Ray at third base or shortstop. When I told the other ball players in Winnipeg who would know Ray that he had passed, their comments were consistently that he was a great player but also a real quality person. That is the way Ray will be remembered. Recently, I re-connected with Ray and Linda as they decided to support the local museum in St. Vital where Ray grew up. It was fun to re-visit the “good old days” but to also see the generous and positive man Ray had become. Thank you, Ray, for your friendship and for being such a wonderful teammate. If you find a ball game up in heaven to participate in, I am sure you would be a valued addition. You might even find your neighbour, Barry Wiebe, to reconnect with as teammates. Rest in peace, my friend. - Posted by: John Hindle (friend and teammate) on: Jan 30, 2025

I was so surprised to hear of Ray's passing. Ray was a great ball player and a better teammate. He was the model of consistency and a very comforting force on the diamond. I was always confident that Ray would get the job done and he always did. His family was so supporting at his baseball games and very entertaining to listen to. Recently I re-connected with Ray and Linda and appreciated their support of our local St. Vital Museum. I will miss his positive outlook and smile and hope he has found a game to play in heaven...maybe he has even found his close neighbour and teammate, Barry Wiebe to play with. I will always hold such warm thoughts of Ray on the diamond and as a friend! Rest in peace. - Posted by: John Hindle (friend and teammate) on: Jan 29, 2025

Very sorry to hear of Ray's passing! First thing that came to mind when I heard, was Ray's talent as a baseball player. He certainly made it easy to complete the front end of a double play. On a humorous note. I was ejected from a Junior game ONCE, and upon arriving at the St. B Legion after the game. Ray started singing: "Take Hank out of the ball game"! You know the song! My condolences to Linda and family. #: 44 - Posted by: Hank Lemoine #:44 (St. Boniface Legionaires Junior Baseball Team) on: Jan 29, 2025
