CATHERINE (CATHY) SUSAN JOHNSON

(nee REWCASTLE)

July 23, 1957 - January 21, 2025

It is with great sadness that the family of Cathy Johnson (nee Rewcastle) announces her peaceful passing on January 21, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Cathy is survived by her husband Brad, daughter Alberta, son Cole, sisters, Judy and Patti Rewcastle, as well as nieces, nephews, in-laws and their families.

Cathy was always connected to the environment from an early age and made its protection a career. She served in the Manitoba Government for about 41 years and recently retired as the Secretary to the Clean Environment Commission after 18 years.

Cathy was most content when she could hear the lap of waves on the shore at dusk, the sound of a birdsong at dawn, the rush of a river over the Canadian shield, or the cry of loons courting in spring.

There will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

Cathy’s extended family would like to thank CancerCare Manitoba and the Riverview Health Centre teams for their compassionate and professional care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Cathy's service to our environment with her love and dedication to the greater good, was truly inspiring. Her good works live on. She is missed. Condolences to all friends and family at her passing. - Posted by: Janine Gibson (Colleague) on: May 14, 2025

  • At the Public Interest Law Centre, we saw first hand Cathy's work to protect water, land, plants, birds, animals and people during numerous regulatory hearings relating to Wuskwatim, Keeyask, Bipole III and Sio Silica (after her official retirement). Cathy was a visionary and outstanding public servant. She married deep knowledge, love of community with a truly innovative way of thinking. Apart from being extraordinarily organized, she could be counted on to find great experts and (quietly) support the CEC towards its own, best independent insight. - Posted by: Byron Williams, Director, Public Interest Law Centre (Professional Colleague) on: Feb 21, 2025

  • So sorry to read of Cathy’s passing. I had the privilege of working with Cathy at the Clean Environment Commission. Her dedication to the environment was truly remarkable. She will truly be missed. So sorry for your loss Brad, Alberta and Cole. - Posted by: Joyce Mueller (Coworker) on: Feb 02, 2025
