BRENT ROSS JAMES THOMSON

Brent R.J. Thomson B.Sc (Hon) MD CCFP ACBOM (born July 12, 1957) passed away peacefully at home January 31, 2025, after a two-year battle with cancer that was fought with courage and grace.

Dr. Thomson received his MD at the University of Manitoba in 1982 and first practiced family medicine before his long career in occupational medicine with the City of Winnipeg and later as regional head of occupational medicine for Health Canada. After he retired, he devoted himself to those with chronic arthritis and pain through practice and research at the clinic which he helped to found. His empathy derived from his own chronic pain from injuries sustained earlier in life and his own personal experiences - some good and others less so - in the health care system. This motivated him to always be the best he could be as a physician. To Brent, the patient was always a person first and not a diagnosis. He was sincerely appreciated by his patients and all those who worked with him. That was all the reward and recognition that he wanted.

In his university days, he was torn between pursuing a career in minerology or medicine. He continued to be an avid amateur mineralogist throughout his life and found time to pursue other interests in natural history, including birding, during his many travels. He read widely and was student of history in order to better understand our chaotic world.

Brent's empathy, grace, courage, humility and humour - even in the most challenging circumstances - made up this extraordinary person, whose life has enriched us all.

He is survived by his beloved family: wife Karen, daughter Amanda, and son Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Chantelle and grandson Paul.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at St. Aiden's Anglican Church, 274 Campbell Street, Winnipeg Manitoba.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in remembrance of Brent to the Cancer Society, James Thomson Memorial Chair (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra) c/o The Winnipeg Foundation, or other charities in support of wildlife and natural history.

I will cherished every encounter I have had with him over the phone and much more personal appointments with him. There was never a time I left a discussion with him unsatisfied and relieved of my chronic battle. He was an inspiration of vibrancy, hope and encouragement to face this decease with courage and positivity! • My sincerest condolences to Dr. Brent’s family and staff at Thomson House. I had the great privilege of being one of his ‘patients’. To say he was a patient and caring doctor does not do him justice, he was much more. Dr. Brent always went above & beyond to try and help you, and his chats, WOW, how many other doctors would spend the time to treat you as not only his patient but as a fellow enthusiast in his hobbies. I will miss this kind and beautiful man and again my deepest sympathies go out to his family. You were so lucky to have him in your lives and he will be greatly missed.
