Peacefully on January 23, 2025, Richard Wallace Wadephul, 88, was called home to his Heavenly Father.
Left to mourn and celebrate his life are his wife Valerie (Drewrys); daughters, Sallie, and Mary (Audie); sons, Noah, Walter (April), and Timothy (Nicole); grandchildren, Jillian, Rick, Michaela, Matthew, Austin, Asher and Anna; and great-grandchild Dawsyn. He is also survived by four sisters and one brother.
Born in Tomah, Wisconsin and raised on a turkey farm, he joined the USAF at 18. He served in Germany, Vietnam and the USA, inspiring those under his command to excellence by sharing their duties and working hard with them. He retired as a Tech Sergeant in 1975 and moved to Winnipeg with his family to help his parents-in-law in their senior years.
Here, Richard worked in the lumber industry - at Portage Lumber and Dominion Lumber - and, finally, in home construction.
Richard loved being outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, feeding the birds and watching storms. When he wasn’t looking at the clouds, he was scouring the ground for mushrooms, blueberry bushes, or his carefully nurtured seedlings - particularly his tomatoes.
Richard was an excellent storyteller and enjoyed sharing tales of his life, and his adventures hunting and fishing. He passed his love for the natural world and its creatures, large and small, to his children.
Most recently, Richard was known for his delicious banana bread, generously gifted to friends, family and the local WPS and FPS stations.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 710 Roanoke Street, Transcona.
