HAL ROBERT ALLEN

March 29, 1958 - February 5, 2025

On the afternoon of February 5, at Grace Hospital with family by his side, Hal peacefully left us. He was born in the old Grace Hospital 66 plus years earlier and lived in Winnipeg for the majority of his life.

Predeceased by his parents Jim (1978) and Colleen (2008) and brother Jay (1965), Hal leaves to mourn his three brothers, Van, Tab (Geeta) and Tod (Cher) as well as numerous nieces and nephews and, of course, coworkers and friends. Hal will be especially missed by his nephew Steven who has lived with him for over 15 years.

As a child, Hal battled childhood arthritis and was told he would never walk. Hal would have none of that and walked and ran despite the painful disease for the rest of his life. That stubborn streak stayed with him until the very end. Hal attended Gordon Bell High School where he had his very own "Hal Allen Fan Club."

He also joined the Navy League and then the Sea Cadets. This took him up and down the Pacific Coast from BC to Mexico. He was very proud of serving in this capacity. Hal played clarinet and was lead clarinetist for the cadet band as well as teaching others how to play. In 1981, Hal went to work in Prince Albert, SK. While there, he became a father. Unfortunately, our family knows very little of his daughter Rebecca, as the relationship did not work out.

Hal moved home and started a career as a courier, a job he maintained for the next 43 years. He loved it. It wasn't long before he was in high demand for businesses to have him as their courier of choice. In 1983, what is now Robertson Shypit Soble Wood won the Hal lottery. He became their courier and they became his new fan club. He was so happy to help out in any way he could, far beyond being a courier. The love was very mutual. He was still working for Robertson Shypit Soble Wood when he passed, 42 years later.

Celebration of Life at Varsity View Community Centre, 315 Laxdal Rd., March 4, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Richard Rosin Funeral Director Inc. presiding.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I just heard of Hal's passing from a courier. I work for Taylor McCaffrey LLP and have known Hal for many years. Always a treat to see him; he loved his job so much and it showed! Always cheerful and kind, even on days when you could see he was feeling pain. I admired him so much and will miss him. Rest in peace my friend. • Just found out today of Hal's passing. I always looked forward to seeing Hal when he would deliver to TDS mail room. Close to certain holidays Hal would always have a chocolate to give to you (Halloween, Easter and Valentine's Day). He always had time to share a story. He was very knowledgeable. I will miss him dearly. I know the last years have been difficult and had slowed him down, but he still managed a big hello when he would deliver to us. Rest easy Hal. You will be missed. • I worked at the Courthouse until my retirement in April of last year. Hal was one of my favourite customers. He was always so friendly and chatty. I looked forward to him coming in. He was pleasure to serve. My favourite saying every time he came in “How the Hal are ya Hal”. Rest in peace my friend - Posted by: Dawn Champagne (Friend) on: Mar 03, 2025

  • I learned of Hal’s passing today via ‘a courier’. Always a smile when he either ‘picked up or dropped off’ a letter/packet. Hal made sure I would remember him in the beginning by reminding me to think “what the Hal is his name”! Thank you for the warm wishes and big smiles! You will be remembered. - Posted by: Rhonda (customer) on: Feb 12, 2025

  • Hi, I’m Leah Allen Botros, Uncle Hal’s niece. I have a few memories of my uncle that I would like to share. Anyone that knows him would know what a helpful and caring person he was. He would often go out of his way to help out family members. He was especially helpful to his mom when she was sick. He helped with her personal needs and meals like a PSW. They lived in the family home together, along with my cousin Steven. I remember visiting them and Grandma telling me how Uncle Hal helped her. You may also know that my uncle was somewhat “choosy” (picky), when it came to food. He liked things a certain way, and my mom would have to leave out certain ingredients when she cooked for him. He mastered Grandma’s famous roast beef dinner, especially the Yorkshire puddings from scratch. My mom tried to make them many times but has now resorted to buying the premade frozen ones. The Allen family always liked playing games and can be very competitive. When we visited Victor St. for dinners we would either play games or watch Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy together, something our family still does in Mississauga. The brothers would always compete with who would answer the questions first or win. A lot of times they would answer before I got a chance to or I would think of the answer but not bother saying it. My brother sometimes answered. I will really miss my Uncle Hal and being able to see him. This is a sad time for our family, especially my dad, his brothers, and my cousin Steven. I hope Uncle Hal rests peacefully now. - Posted by: Leah Botros Allen (Neice) on: Feb 10, 2025

  • Sending all my love to the Alan boys. Growing up 2 doors away from you was a pleasure and we had many wonderful memories playing kick the can and all the games kids today have no idea about. My memories of the Victor street gang and and will ever be close to my heart. REST IN PEACE Hal. - Posted by: Debbie Fakes (Dear Friend.) on: Feb 08, 2025
