It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ronald Stanton Cherney who was born on December 7, 1949, in Gimli, MB to Thorey Thompson and Stan Cherney. He died on February 20, 2025, of pancreatic cancer.
Ron was born in Gimli, MB and went to school there until graduating from high school. He always had a special place in his heart for Gimli and went back as often as he could. He shared friendships with the people he knew for his entire life, returning to celebrate significant birth years with his former classmates.
Ron’s optimism and zest for living was present throughout his life which shone through to the very end. He had the ultimate farewell tour over the last year, meeting every goal he set for himself including looking and feeling terrific during his summer High School reunion trip to Gimli and celebrating his 75th birthday in December.
He had a special relationship with everyone at tThe Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre. They have taken very good care of him for many years. It’s thanks to their care and expertise that he was able to make that special trip to Gimli and feel so good on his birthday.
Ron signed up for Medical Assistance in Dying in May 2024. The MAiD program was very important to alleviate Ron’s suffering at the end of his life. We are so grateful to the medical personnel who make this service possible.
Ron has lived in Ottawa, ON since he was a young man, where he and Ellen raised their children, enjoying many close, lifelong relationships. His love and respect of his children and their spouses brought him tremendous pride. The arrival of each grandchild compounded his pride and joy in his family.
Marrying Deborah expanded his brood adding her daughters, their spouses and five kids, whom he developed strong loving connections with.
Ron was filled with complete wonder and delight in all 13 of his grandchildren. He’d watch them in awe as they learned and processed the world around them. His laughter filling the room with each of their quips and maneuvers.
His hugs and words of encouragement were sought by all.
Ron never met a stranger. His genuine curiosity for people magnetized them to him which made him a highly respected and successful businessman as owner of Message Centre Wireless. The team knew they could count on him, and he threw one hell of a holiday party.
Ron loved watching sports. Lots of sports. All the sports. Creating many special connections and memories with families and friends over the years, especially when watching the Super Bowl where many friendly rivalries were played out.
It’s unanimous that Deborah’s unwavering support, delicious freshly prepared meals, and meticulous note-taking that made the Nurses giddy, are why we had so much bonus time with Ron.
He was loved and gave love and will be missed tremendously.
Ron is survived by his sister Rhonda Cherney Svendsen (Don) and brother Bruce Cherney, his children, Allison (Justin Roth), Jason (Lauren Posen), Carolyn (Spencer Ross), and Daniel (Vanessa Lawton Cherney) and grandchildren, Hudson, Easton, and Brooklyn Ross, Shay and Denny Cherney, Bowie and Lola Roth, and Max Cherney.
Ron is also survived by his wife, Deborah Ferris, and her daughters, Michele Magner (Todd) and Rachel Klapperich (Matt) and the grandchildren, Tessa, Maya, and Logan Magner, and Michael and Anthony Klapperich.
Ron will be buried in the Gimli Cemetery where there will be a graveside farewell for him when the weather is warm. If you make it to Gimli, go check out his tombstone. There’s a special message for all who do.
Please consider making a contribution to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation Cancer Centre.
