ROBERT RICHARD (BOB) HOLLOWAY

Robert Richard (Bob) Holloway died on March 1, 2025. He was born in Winnipeg in 1937 and grew up in Charleswood, the youngest of eight offspring. He worked his way through high school and university and received his BA degree from the University of Manitoba in 1961.

After graduating he worked for several years as a research and educational secretary for a Winnipeg social service agency; three of the books he wrote on his work were published by the agency to widespread critical notice in the field. He moved on to become the public relations director for the Manitoba Dental Association in 1965 and the publicity director for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1968. In 1970 he became the founding managing director for Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers. In 1975 he was appointed director of University Centre at the University of Manitoba.

At this time he purchased a small farm in Sperling and, later, the movie theatre in Carman. He left University Centre in 1977. He had a home built on his farm in which he and his wife lived for 28 years.

He sold the movie theatre in 1984 and started a print advertising business that eventually involved the preparation and circulation of seven periodical publications, mostly in south-central Manitoba.

In 2004 he sold the farm and moved to Headingley where he had a home built, and in 2007 he sold most of his business interests and went into semi-retirement.

Bob was married twice: Ruth Hajek, 1960 to 1965, and Carol Archibald, from 1974 'til death did them part. He had two offspring: Karen Aida in 1961 and Robert Ivan in 1977.

Bob and Carol met while playing tennis, to which he was a devotee along with other racquet sports most of his life.

He engaged in many activities, including golf, badminton, woodworking, cycling, skiing, gardening, reading widely, making wine and spirits and playing the violin. He cross-country cycled many parts of North America plus England and France. He built several boats, one a sailboat, and took up sailing. He also learned to fly.

Besides the books he authored, his writings occasionally appeared in a variety of periodicals.

A Party in Honour of Bob’s Life will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Breezy Bend Country Club, 7620 Roblin Blvd., Headingley, Manitoba.

At end of day he knew that dark is right...
