GLADYS RUTH TILLER

Gladys Ruth Tiller (Wikdahl) passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025 at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon.

Gladys was born May 19, 1932 to Gustav and Ida Wikdahl (Hjelmeland) on the family farm near Erickson. A simple upbringing taught Gladys hard work, determination and kindness. Gladys spent her youth doing chores on the farm. She then attended school at Otter Lake and Erickson after which she became a teacher at a local schoolhouse. She met her future husband Harry Tiller and married on August 31, 1957. They moved to Brandon and built their family home on Dennis St. where they raised their daughters Sharon and Donna and celebrated many milestones.

Summer weekends were spent at the cottage at Ditch Lake. Gladys and Harry had a love of travel and partook in numerous bus tours and car trips across Canada and the U.S.A. even making two trips to Norway to visit relatives.

Gladys worked in the cafeteria at Crocus Plains and conducted surveys for Stats / Elections Canada. She volunteered many hours at The Brandon General Hospital, Christmas Cheer and Fairview Personal Care Home, just to name a few. She was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where she attended Sunday services and volunteered on multiple committees. Gladys loved bowling, golfing, a good game of cards and watching baseball and curling.

Gladys lived in the family home until moving to Lions Manor in the fall of 2014. During her time at the Manor Gladys enjoyed many evenings of cards, games and socializing. Needing more care, Gladys eventually moved to Rideau Personal Care Home in the summer of 2023 where she spent the remainder of her life.

Gladys was pre-deceased by her husband Harry Tiller, granddaughter-in-law Becky Burgess, parents Gustav and Ida Wikdahl, brothers Henry and Robert.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Sharon Burgess (Bob) and Donna Messel (Mike), grandchildren Katherine and Bobby Burgess (Jayden) and Cory Messel along with great-grandchildren Jordynn and Cohen Burgess. Her sister Mabel Brewer (Donnie), brother Earl Wickdahl (Val), sisters-in-law Kaye Tiller and Betty Wikdahl as well as numerous nieces and nephews will also share in the memories of her life.

A private graveside service will take place at a later date at the Scandinavia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Gladys' name to: Redeemer Lutheran Church, Rideau Personal Care Home or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

  • My condolences to the family of Mrs. Tiller . I knew her from my time spent at Crocus Plains high school. She was a class act and a sweet soul. I loved running into her at the hospital because she would always have a smile on her face. Mrs. Tiller, you were a wonderful lady. - Posted by: Deanna Murkin (Acquaintance) on: Apr 05, 2025
