GUNNTHORA GISLADOTTIR

January 6, 1924 - March 19, 2025

This fine lady died peacefully on March 19, at Betel Home in Gimli, Manitoba.

Gunnthora came to Canada from Papey in East Iceland via England, where she had trained and worked as an orthopaedic nurse. After spending a year in Toronto, she arrived in Winnipeg in 1967. In Winnipeg, Gunnthora worked as a nurse for many years at the Winnipeg General Hospital, now the Health Sciences Centre, retiring at age 65. Gunnthora spent her later years living in Gimli and in 2021 moved to the Betel Care Home.

Gunnthora leaves behind many friends and relatives, both in Canada and Iceland.

Thanks to the good people of Betel Home for taking such fine care of Gunnthora for the last few years. A big thank you to her friends, Lorna, Gunnvor, and Maria for their daily visits and good care.

A gathering of remembrance and in celebration of a long, well lived life, will be held at the Scandinavian Centre on Saturday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome.

Donations in Gunnthora’s memory can be made to the Lögberg-Heimskringla Inc., 835 Marion Street, Winnipeg, MB R2J 0K6 or to the Scandinavian Centre, 764 Erin St., Winnipeg, MB R3G 2W4.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Gunnthora was a dear friend and neighbour across the street! Always cheerful and friendly, and fun to visit with and often share dinner. She was a fabulous cook and baker, I particularly remember her wonderful 7 layer cake, and watching her bake the layers so carefully they would all be even. And also the delicious Cinnamon cookie and whipped cream cake she made for my birthday one year, she gave me this recipe but I can't make it as it is in Icelandic! I learned so much about Icelandic traditions from her and this will always stay in my memory, as I now live in Toronto, the city she first came to upon her arrival in Canada. Many happy memories and much love...🥰 - Posted by: Carole A Brearley (Friend and neighbour across the street) on: Jul 30, 2025

  • We were saddened to hear of Gunnthora's passing. She was a fine lady and a great source of information. One of her greatest attributes was her capacity for loving others and a genuine concern for the welfare of her many friends and acquaintances. We have all lost a truly loving friend and while we will miss her, she has left us with many happy memories. Vertu Blessed frendi. - Posted by: William & Lorraine Helgason (friends) on: Apr 05, 2025
