JOSEPH EUGENE GILBERT FILION

November 4, 1927 - April 23, 2025

Peacefully on April 23, 2025, at Eriksdale Personal Care Home, Gilbert passed away at age 97.

He is survived by his daughter Betty (Skipp) Stabner; sons, Bruce (Krin) Filion and Robert (Tracy) Filion; daughter Barb Filion; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister Yvonne Gibson; brother in-law Gordon (Darlene) Daily; sister in-law Lovie Daily; along with several nieces and nephews.

Gilbert was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Marie (Medrise) Filion; brother Lionel and his wife Betty Filion; brother Aurel Filion; brother-in-law Jack Gibson; father-in-law Tom Daily, mother-in-law Margaret Daily; brothers-in-law, Fred and Laurence Daily, sister-in-law Evelyn Daily and sister-in-law Carolyn Daily.

Gilbert was born November 4, 1927, in Cayer, Manitoba and lived there until he was 10 years old, the family then moved to Steep Rock. After his schooling, he started commercial fishing, then purchased his farm in Steep Rock. He married Violet Daily in 1956 and they started their family, having four children (Betty, Robert, Bruce and Barb). Together they farmed until Mom's health required her to move closer to medical care in Winnipeg, they stayed in touch, speaking nightly, by phone. In 2016 Barb moved in with Dad to offer support until 2022 when his health worsened, and he moved into the care home. He was forward thinking in his many endeavours. He read a lot and attended many meetings with his fellow farmers and fishers to gain more knowledge in his pursuits.

Dad was an avid commercial fisherman, starting when he was 16 and continuing until he was 90. He received the Long Service Fisher award for fishing over 50 years on Lake Manitoba. He was instrumental helping to start the Ashern Fisheries Coop. He was also a director for the Manitoba Beef Growers Association.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Faulkner Community Hall. Service will conclude at the hall with a lunch to follow.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Eriksdale Personal Care Home for their care and support for dad as his health declined.
