It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Wayne Gilling on October 9, 2024 at the age of 77.
Wayne leaves behind his partner, Terry Ruiz; his children, Lisa and Bert (Sheila); and his pride and joy, his grandchildren Zach, Kyra, Amelie and Gavin; and his sister Iris (Bob Tuff); and brothers Bob and Ron Simmerson. Wayne is predeceased by his grandson Ryan Couling, parents Jack and Mabel Gilling and mother Elizabeth Ellis.
Born in Winnipeg on July 8, 1947, Wayne grew up in Boissevain. After graduation, he completed his pilot's license and went on to work in Prince Rupert, BC flying small aircraft along the BC coast. A few years later, he returned to Manitoba to begin his career with Manitoba Pool Elevators (Agricore and Viterra). His work was based in Cardale, Alexander and Killarney, where he retired from the company after nearly 30 years of service. He took great pride in his career with the grain/farm supplies industry and was deeply involved with the union representing grain buyers across the prairies. He then went on to become co-owner/operator of the Erin Inn Motel in Killarney.
Upon retiring, Wayne took some time to travel, then spent winters in the Philippines and summers at his cabin at Clear Lake. He was well known as a talented and award winning wood carver, which was his passion, but he also had a keen interest in classic cars and photography. He was a skilled mechanic and carpenter having built the family house and cabin as well as two classic cars. Wayne followed his father's footsteps as a member of the Freemasons for many years. He was also very involved in community committees and took on the role of town constable and as well as fire captain in Alexander.
