JAMES (JIMMY) MURPHY

A champion, a coach, a crooner and the proud patriarch of a grateful family.

Forever loved. Forever remembered.

It is with profound sadness and love that we announce the passing of James “Jimmy” Murphy — beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, coach, teammate, crooner, and the proud patriarch of our family — who passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025 at the age of 91.

James was a true Winnipeg legend, a man whose legacy lives on through the generations he inspired both on and off the field. Born in Bonnyrigg, a small village just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland, he developed a lifelong love for football, music, and family. After completing his national service James turned his focus to love, eventually winning the heart of his beloved wife of 67 years, Lilyan.

In 1959, James and Lil began a new chapter in Winnipeg, Canada. He quickly made his mark, joining the Winnipeg Scottish Football Club and becoming one of the top scorers in the country. In 1962, he helped lead the team to a Canadian Championship — a historic achievement that earned the squad a place in the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. With James’ passing, we say goodbye to the last surviving member of that remarkable team.

His passion for the game endured well beyond his playing years. In the 1980s, Jimmy coached youth soccer for River Heights and South End United, leading teams to multiple city and provincial championships. More than wins and titles, he offered mentorship, encouragement, and a steady grounding presence to countless young athletes.

Off the field, Jimmy embraced life with equal vigor. A skilled machinist, he worked for 39 years at Manitoba Hydro, often called upon for his meticulous craftsmanship on special provincial projects. A natural performer, he was a gifted lounge singer who brought his special charisma to stages around Winnipeg. His talents helped support family trips back to Scotland and filled our home with music and joy.

Above all else, James was the heart of our family. As patriarch, he brought strength, humour, wisdom, and unwavering love to every generation. He was a proud and devoted father to Karen (Andy), Susan (Jerry), Lisa (Cal) and Jim (Deanna), and a deeply loving grandfather to David, Alex, Claire, Aidan, Jonathan, Sean, and Davis. Great-grandfather to Parker, Mila, and Taylor. Whether cheering at games, applauding recitals, or simply offering a quiet word of encouragement, he took pride in every one of their accomplishments

In recent years, he resided at the Poseidon Long Term Personal Care Home, where the staff and fellow residents came to love him for his charm, kindness and gentle spirit. The family offers heartfelt thanks to the entire Poseidon team for their compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 19, 2025 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Canoe Club, 40 Dunkirk Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Autism Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Want to send our sincere condolences on James' passing. Always enjoyed being in his company. Very nice man, he will be missed. 🙏😞♥️ - Posted by: Debbie and Ron King (Friends) on: Jun 07, 2025

  • James was married to my sister, Lil, for nearly 67 years. I was 6 or 7 years old when Lil and James started dating and I soon claimed him as a big brother. James’s love for my sister, his quiet sense of humor and love of music and song endeared him to our whole family. I am sincerely grateful to have had James in my life, that he was a great friend to my husband, Dave and Godfather to our two sons, Alan and Kevin. His memory will live in our hearts forever. Rest in peace James. - Posted by: Valerie Hogg (Sister in Law) on: May 17, 2025
