Audrey Margaret McPherson passed away unexpectedly, of heart failure, on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta. Born on September 23, 1938, she was the eldest of four siblings born to William and Margaret (Downey) Gash of the Cordova District. In 1961, Audrey married Finlay Bruce McPherson, and since 1970 they had made their home in Lethbridge.
She attended Glenburney, a one-room schoolhouse, for Grades 1–9, took Grade 10 by correspondence, then boarded in town for Grades 11 & 12 at Minnedosa Crossley Collegiate. After high school, she enrolled in Brandon College (affiliated with the University of Manitoba) where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Teaching Certificate. For two years Audrey taught Chemistry and Physics at the Souris High School, followed by one year of teaching in Winnipeg at the David Thompson Junior High School. Then, leaving Manitoba, she taught Math and Science at the Kirkland Lake High School in Northern Ontario.
Growing up, Audrey studied piano, attaining Grade 8 from The Royal Conservatory of Music. She used this talent, playing accompaniment and also playing with a Western Fiddle Group in Lethbridge.
Sewing, gardening, preparing nutritious meals and supporting her daughter and son in their activities provided enjoyment. As well, she and Fin planned camping trips with their young family, pulling their camper trailer to many locations in Canada and the U.S.A. Audrey liked visiting and reminiscing with both her and her husband’s extended family. She had a happy life growing up on the family farm, and although she lived in four provinces after marrying, she was always keen to come “home” to re-connect.
Audrey will be greatly missed by her husband, Fin; daughter, Averill McPherson Purpura (Fab); son, Brock McPherson (Lisa); brother, Dwight Gash (Arnie); sister, Janet Lettley (Brian); as well as sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Her brother, Gary Gash, predeceased her in 2012.
A funeral service was held on April 24, 2025 from Whites Funeral Chapel in Minnedosa Manitoba, with interment following in the Minnedosa Cemetery.
