Bernice was raised on a farm in Vita, Manitoba where she learned a good work ethic. After she left home, she did a number of jobs, including teacher and bank teller. She married Tony in 1955 and they owned and operated a number of businesses, including the Rennie Grocery and the Whitemouth Kitchen. Bernice loved her children and grandchild. She was a great cook and made the best perogies and dill pickles in Manitoba, as far as her kids were concerned.

Cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held. For those who wish to make a donation in her memory, please contribute to the Golden Door Geriatric Centre whose staff did a wonderful job caring for Bernice.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I just happened across this notice and wanted to extend my sincere condolences to all that have been touched by this loss. There are no right words during difficult times such as these. Take care Jim. You and yours have been close in thought since I first learned that your mom wasn't doing well. I did reach out to see how you were doing but unfortunately there was no update available to be shared at that time. I am very sorry to hear this sad news today. - Posted by: Wendy Megaw (Past Coworker of Jim's) on: Jul 28, 2025

  • I would like to give my condolences to the Sitar family on the passing of Auntie Bernice. She was a very kind and patient person with the just the right amount of " spunk "mixed in. My earliest memories of her was of her babysitting me on Kenaston Ave. There was always a guarentee of cocoa and her exercising in that cool basement, to the legendary Ed Allen exercise show, which she did enthusiastically. Your family had lived in many great places over the years. Springfield, with Butchy and Susie and a couple of horses added to the family, the cabin at Brereton lake, the Okanagan Valley ,Rennie and Lewis come to mind the most. I had many great visits, with never a dull moment, with many new types of adventures for myself in my younger years. We had much less contact as we got older, but my dad always kept me in the loop with updates. I had not seen her for many years, but we did meet up in 2016 in Beausejour when she helped me with my dad's obituary. Her personality, fortunately had not changed over the years. We kept in touch till sometime in 2021.She would give me updates on her health, family, church, an occasional beef about the government and usually a comment how good me and Jim me used to get along as kids. She gave lots of details about Ryne's activities and accomplishments .I could tell she was a big fan and I see he is an accomplished angler according to the Master Angler book. In 2020, in my mother's last year, my mother and I were talking about Auntie Bernice and she told me a story about the time when I was young and we were all at the beach in Gimili and that I had drowned and that it was Auntie Bernice that pulled me out and saved my life. Nobody had mentioned this to me all those years. I had dreams of drowning repeatedly, but thought it was just a repeated nightmare. I never knew it was a memory of a real event. I now know that Auntie Bernice was not only a kind person, but a life saver. - Posted by: Gary Storoschuk (Nephew) on: Jun 01, 2025

  • Our Moms really enjoyed spending time together and good thing because we were in Birds HIll and Brereton Lake at least many times! So many memories of our families "playing" together - my Dad and your Dad such an unlikely friendship and yet they were tight! Of course your Mom and my Dad were the cousins. I was so lucky to have seen Bernice just a month ago. Thinking of you all. - Posted by: Faye Wankling (Cousin) on: May 31, 2025

  • My mom moved to the city in 2022. Since then, mom and I spent a lot of time together going shopping, having meals together and generally having some "happy times". I am left with a lot of good memories. RIP mom. - Posted by: Lorraine S (daughter) on: May 31, 2025
