EDWARD MICHAEL POPEL

Ed peacefully departed this world on January 12, 2025 at the age of 90 at Riverview Health Centre. Born and raised in Transcona, Ed was known for his passion for sports and his infectious enthusiasm for life. While academics may not have been his forte, his natural charisma and people skills would later prove invaluable in his chosen career.

In 1954, Ed married the love of his life, Carole, embarking on a beautiful journey that would span over seven decades. Together, they raised four children: Darleen, Richard, Curtis, and James. Ed's devotion to his family was unwavering, and he found great joy in watching his children grow and participate in sports and other interests. Ed's professional life was marked by an impressive 53 year career in real estate sales, where his genuine nature and dedication to his clients earned him respect and admiration throughout the industry. His work ethic and passion for helping others find their perfect home left an indelible mark on countless lives.

In 1966, Ed and his family moved to Southdale, where he became an integral part of the community. His love for hockey and commitment to youth sports led him to become one of the founding members of the Southdale Lakers hockey program, a legacy that continues to thrive today. Ed's zest for life extended beyond work and community service. He found great pleasure in spending time at the family cottage in Lester Beach, creating cherished memories with his loved ones. These moments of relaxation and togetherness were a source of immense joy for Ed throughout his life.

Ed is survived by his devoted loving wife Carole, his sons, Richard (Ingrid), Curtis (Tammy), James (Tracey), grandchildren, Cory, Braden (Cindi), Christopher (Tori), Daniel, Eric (Samantha) and Abigail, numerous great-grandchildren, as well as his brother Stan and sister Helen. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Darleen in 2007, whose memory he carried close to his heart.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at Riverview Health Centre Alzheimer's Unit A1 for their compassionate care and support during Ed's last two years.

Ed's life was a testament to the power of community, family, and pursuing one's passions. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the relationships he nurtured, and the community he helped build. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private celebration of Ed's life was held on May 21st where many great memories were shared, and a great time was had by all!

Flowers and donations are respectfully declined but please share a story or memory of Ed with your family or friends!

We were next door neighbors for the better part of 15 years on Edgemont Drive and Ed was always friendly and welcoming whenever we'd chat (Carole too!). We hope that with each passing day, the sadness will leave and get easier for you all. Rob - Posted by: Rob & Kelly Truthwaite (Next Door Neighbors) on: Jun 03, 2025
