Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Apologies for my belated condolences! May David's memory be for a blessing this Christmas to those who mourn. David was an early leader in the advancement of Geriatrics in Winnipeg and Manitoba, under the tutelage of Dr. Jack MacDonell, the Father of Geriatrics in Manitoba, David, together with Dr. Howard Zacharias, Dr. Warren Davidson (of blessed memory) and me, comprised 'Jack's Boys', those young doctors favoured with being given the opportunity of studying Geriatric Medicine as Royal Canadian Legion Visiting Fellows in Geriatrics in the UK Back in Winnipeg we would rescue frail failing seniors admitted to Emergency who were deemed 'unsuitable' for the Clinical Teaching Unit, admit them to 4E or 5E in the old wings of the Health Sciences Centre, and give them our all in employing a multidisciplinary approach to case managing the medical functional social and psychological contributors to their burden of illness, and returning many to live at home in the community. David taught me a lot in his quiet and affable manner. His regard for The Other was highly-evolved and his skills as a teacher, clinician, and administrator were notable. The only time I detected a flicker of irritation was when we were asked to compose exam questions for a qualifying Royal College examination for Special Competence in Geriatrics that we were not allowed to qualify for! Please.accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your Loved-one. Me his memory inspire us to redouble our efforts to comfort and to console frail failing seniors and their families who love them. Well done, David. You will be long-remembered. - Posted by: Dr. David Brook (Colleague) on: Dec 18, 2025

  • Ruth and I were greatly saddened to learn of David's passing. I first met David and his parents and sister Joan when we were teenagers. We quickly became good friends as I very much appreciated his exceptional intelligence and quiet, but delightful sense of humour. We spent a significant amount of time together during our university years, and subsequently through marriage and the births of our respective children. I think it is fair to claim that David and I were almost solely responsible for the profitability of the Donald Street Pizza Place in Winnipeg during the 1960's. David, Penny, Ruth and I shared many entertaining times together in Winnipeg, the mountains around Banff, in England and in Spain. While circumstance and geography ultimately resulted in our losing touch with one another, those memories remain as a cherished reminder of many years of friendship. Ruth and I send our condolences to all David's family - we hope that, as they do for us, your memories of David will help you to deal with the loss of a husband, father, grandfather, friend, colleague and physician. • I worked with David for several years on the Interdisciplinary Summer Research Program at Deer Lodge Centre. He always provided the “teamwork” seminar where he explained to a group of undergraduate students from diverse disciplines that the leader of a team should be the person who best knows the patient and their needs. He was patient-centred in his approach and he inspired students to take this approach. He was a gracious and gentle person with a quiet dry sense of humour. My condolences to Pat and family members. - Posted by: Lorna Guse (Colleague) on: Jun 04, 2025
