Reg will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his family, including daughters Sandra (Clay) and Carol: daughter-in-law Lisa: grandchildren Kyle and Emily (Cale); Ryan and Mark (Meagan), great-granddaughter Luna and Evie: brother Ian (Cathy), sisters Joan and Ann; cousin Stuart (Linda); and numerous nieces and nephews. Reg was predeceased by his wife of almost 63 years Josephine (Jo), son Neil, parents Ernest and Gladys, and sister Doris.
Born in Perth, Scotland on September 11, 1929, Reg emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada in 1950 at the age of 21, bravely seeking to start life in a new country. It was here that he established his career in newspaper publishing, retiring from the Winnipeg Free Press in 1989 as Director of Advertising. Winnipeg was also where he met and married the love of his life, Jo Englot, in 1955.
Ever the proud Scotsman, Dad joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and served as Commanding Officer from 1974 to 1976. He remained active with the Camerons as a member of the Senate, an emeritus member of the Advisory Board, and a member of the Cameron Association, as well as being the first and long-time bookkeeper of the Cameron Foundation. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the regiment and attended numerous Cameron events and celebrations throughout his life. Many of us fondly remember joining Dad at Robbie Burns' suppers, pretending to understand the Ode to the Haggis while sampling the Scottish "delicacy".
Reg spent many happy summers with family at the cottage on Ghost Lake in northwestern Ontario. He was kept busy playing horseshoes by the lake, relaxing in the sauna, playing mahjong in the evenings, hunting frogs with the kids after dark, and fishing with the grandkids. Dad enjoyed playing host to friends and family throughout the year and was always ready to welcome guests with a drink, with G & T's being a particular specialty. But more than anything, he was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who valued family over all things.
"If there's another world,
he lives in bliss;
If there is none,
he made the best of this."
From Epitaph on A Friend by
Robert Burns
