SUSAN AND RICHARD NOWELL

A Legacy Forever Remembered

It is with heavy hearts that the Nowell family must announce the passing of two of the most compassionate souls to ever walk the earth. On May 13, 2025, Susan Nowell, age 61, and Richard Nowell, age 59, suddenly passed away at the Nowell family home in Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba.

Richard Joseph Nowell was born on January 29, 1966, to Vienna and Richard Nowell in Winnipeg. In his youth, Richard shared his home with his adoring sister, Candace, who he never let forget who was older. Richard, or "Richie", grew to love anything with a set of tires on it, from hot wheels to bicycles to dirt bikes and sleds. He was also a talented Ukrainian dancer and hockey player. Most of all, he loved cars. Richie lived and breathed car culture and could fix anything and everything. After graduating high school in Selkirk, Richie worked at the old Coca-Cola plant in Winnipeg before going on to complete Manitoba Hydro's Electrical Maintenance Technician Program. Once on with Hydro, Richie worked in various remote places. While Richie missed the car culture of Lockport, he was able to immerse himself in his other passion: fishing. Richie threw a rod in every single chance he got. His work took him from Snow Lake and Thompson to Gods Lake Narrows and Jen-peg, even all the way to Island Lake. While working for Hydro, Richie sometimes did repairs for the local fishing lodge. It was at this fishing lodge he met a beautiful, fiery American girl named Sue.

Susan Marie-Elizabeth Cybell was born on August 20, 1963, to Victoria Nemoir and Roland Cybell in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Thrust into a large house as the third child of five, she shared her upbringing with her two brothers, Steve and Chris, and her two sisters, Rose and Kate. In her youth, Sue was a vibrant and warm person who, above all else, prioritized her family. Whether she was marching in a band, twirling a baton, spinning around on roller skates, or watching her favourite musical over the holidays, Sue loved to have fun. After graduating high school, Sue found herself living in Northern Manitoba, where she worked at a fishing lodge. The fly-in community may have been a sharp contrast to her upbringing, but she embraced the people all the same. Community and love for one's neighbour were of high value to Sue. It was here that Sue had her first son, Thomas Christopher Brotherston (T.C.). Eventually, it was in Island Lake where Sue also met a charming, wise-cracking Hydro employee named Richie.

Sue and Richie fell for each other so fast they didn't even have time to put their seatbelts on. They completed parts of each other that they never knew they were missing. The pair shared their time fishing with T.C., partying with friends, and taking every chance to drive "his and hers" snowmobiles. The trio later moved south to Lac Du Bonnet, where they had two more sons, Ryland and Emmett Nowell. As friends and neighbours, Sue and Richie are remembered as giving, compassionate and helpful. The pair never missed an opportunity to help others in whatever way they could. Sue and Richie's love for their community is rivalled only by their passion for being parents. Sue and Richie are remembered as passionate, fierce and loving. They never hesitated when it came to making something happen for their kids, even when it meant driving across the Province for a hockey tournament. Sue made the holidays in the home special; from her magical Christmas village to the custom ornaments, she gave the boys each year. She spoiled her family by cooking amazing food, giving the best hugs and loving unconditionally. Richie took every opportunity to share his wealth of knowledge with his kids, teaching his boys how to fish, how to skate, how to fix their cars, and, most often, how to get a quad out of a ditch full of mud.

Sue was predeceased by her mother and father. She is survived by her three sons, two brothers Christopher Cybell (Andrea) and Steve Cybell (Mary-Pat), her two sisters, Rose Seidel (Mike) and Kate Deakin (Dale). Richie was predeceased by his father and stepfather, Victor. He is survived by his sons, his mother, Vienna (Guenter), his sister Candace (David). Both are survived by many family members including numerous nephews (Ben, Sam, Ben and Kristan), nieces (Ava, Sara, Lauren, Nora, Karen and Heather) and countless friends from across North America.

A Celebration of Life will be held among friends and family at the Lac Du Bonnet Community Centre on June 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. Those attending are encouraged to share stories and memories if they are comfortable, as there will be a designated time for doing so.

In place of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre to honour Sue and Richie's love for animals.

A livestream option is available (below) for those unable to attend the service. For more information, please visit the Glen Lawn Funeral Home Website.

The family would like to thank the sheer volume of support, love and compassion received over the last few weeks. Words cannot describe the level of gratitude and love the family feels. It is thanks to the kindness of friends, family, and those who have reached out from far and wide that the lives of Sue and Rich can be honoured appropriately. The family would also like to thank first responders/emergency response staff, including the RCMP, the Manitoba Conservation Officer Service, the Manitoba Wildfire Service, Paramedics, Volunteer Fire Departments, and others, who are putting the lives of others ahead of their own every day so that our Province can be safer during this trying time.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Vienna, Candace, David and family. I was shaken by the loss of Ritchie and his wife Sue. I have very fond memories of Ritchie, from our Ukrainian classes in Junior High to our Ukrainian dancing days. Ritchie, always made me laugh! He made our class fun with his mischievous behavior. I also remember his kindness and caring. I know the road ahead will be hard for both families, for all, I send my deepest condolences and eternal peace, for Ritchie and Sue. - Posted by: Sue Spakowski (Friend form our school days) on: Jun 03, 2025

  • I am heartbroken to hear of this. I have some wonderful memories of Rich from our Ukrainian dance days - he was such a nice person. Please accept my deepest sympathies and know that you are all in my thoughts. - Posted by: Pat Myketa (Friend from Rossdale) on: Jun 02, 2025

  • Dear Vienna, Candace, David and all who knew and loved Richie and Sue, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Reading this beautiful tribute and learning more about their love for each other and family had me both smiling and bawling. Richie was the best neighbour and friend a girl with a dirt bike in St. Andrews could ever ask for. It was a privilege to be his friend. May they both rest in eternal peace and my prayers to all of you, especially their boys, at this beyond unimaginable time. All of my love…Michelle xo - Posted by: Michelle Bailey (Family friend) on: May 31, 2025

  • I met Richie on the first day of trades school with Manitoba Hydro. It turned out we were both hired on the same day. He had payroll number 00665 and I was 00666, so I referred him as the neighbour of the beast. During schools, Richie always had a smile on his face. He was proud of the pickup he drove and the work he had done to it. He was smart and a great guy. I last saw him working at Great Falls at the GS and after 25 years, he hadn't changed. Always the kind person that I met on the first day. My heartfelt condolences to the Nowell family and to all of those who knew them. - Posted by: Claude Berard (former co-worker) on: May 31, 2025
